Objective. We investigated the efficiency of laser speckle flowgraphy for evaluating blood flow in free flaps used for plastic surgery. Methods. We measured blood flow using a visual laser meter capable of providing two-dimensional color graphic representations of flow distribution for a given area using a dynamic laser speckle effect. Using laser speckle flowgraphy, we examined the blood flow ...

For 2-dimensional B-mode ultrasound images, we propose an image enhancement algorithm based on a multi-resolution approach. In the proposed algorithm, we perform the directional filtering and noise reducing procedures from the coarse to fine resolution images that are obtained from the wavelet-transformed data. For directional filtering, the structural feature at each pixel is examined through ...

We present an optical method for measuring the real-time three-dimensional (3D) translational velocity of a diffusely scattering rigid object observed through an imaging system. The method is based on a combination of the motion of random speckle patterns and regular fringe patterns. The speckle pattern is formed in the observation plane of the imaging system due to reflection from an area of t...

We report the development of a novel experimental chamber for experiments in soft x-ray diffraction tomography, diffraction imaging of single biological objects, and magnetic speckle imaging. The chamber will allow for acquisition of nearly full three-dimensional diffraction data sets as well as high magnification zone plate images of holograms for the diffraction tomography experiment.

Three-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (3DSTE) is accepted as a reliable and feasible method in the quantification of left ventricular (LV) volumes, strains and rotational characteristics. This case aimed to demonstrate the diagnostic importance of 3DSTE in volumetric and functional assessment of an LV aneurysm.

Since blood flow is tightly coupled to the health status of biological tissue, several instruments have been developed to monitor blood flow and perfusion dynamics. One such instrument is laser speckle imaging. The goal of this study was to evaluate the use of two velocity distribution assumptions (Lorentzian- and Gaussian-based) to calculate speckle flow index (SFI) values. When the normalized...

We report a crossover in optical propagation in random layered media from localization towards diffusion as the interaction of the wave with the sample is transformed from one to three dimensional due to nonuniformity in the layer thickness. The crossover occurs at the point that the lateral spread of the wave equals the transverse coherence length in the transmitted speckle pattern.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES The study of myocardial mechanics has a potential role in the detection of cardiac involvement in patients with amyloidosis. This study aimed to characterize 3-dimensional-speckle tracking echocardiography-derived left and right ventricular myocardial mechanics in light chain amyloidosis and examine their relationship with brain natriuretic peptide. METHODS In pati...

AIMS Newly developed two-dimensional ultrasound speckle tracking imaging allows measurements of left ventricular (LV) rotation and twist. Because LV untwisting predominantly occurs during the isovolumic relaxation period, its assessment reflects the process of LV relaxation. The aim of this study was to examine whether LV hypertrophy (LVH) adversely affects LV untwisting and abnormalities in LV...

OBJECTIVES This study assessed the use of 3-dimensional (3D) speckle-tracking echocardiography for noninvasive monitoring and diagnosis of acute rejection in heart transplant recipients. METHODS Fifteen heart transplant recipients underwent 32 endomyocardial biopsies; echocardiography was performed within 3 hours before biopsy. Twenty-four biopsies (acute rejection-negative group) showed grad...
