A maximum-likelihood approach was used to analyse selection pressures acting on genes from all four serotypes of dengue virus (DEN). A number of amino acid positions were identified within the envelope (E) glycoprotein that have been subject to relatively weak positive selection in both DEN-3 and DEN-4, as well as in two of the five genotypes of DEN-2. No positive selection was detected in DEN-...

BACKGROUND Dengue is caused by a RNA virus of the family Flaviviridae, which presents four serotypes (DENV-1 to DENV-4) capable of inducing hemorrhage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of serotype on the outcome of dengue. METHODS This cross-sectional study included data from dengue cases with serotyping results that occurred between 2009 and 2013 in Vitória, Espírito S...

milder than the 1996 outbreak, with less illness and death; most patients had uncomplicated dengue fever, and only a few had DHF/DSS. Of the 874 serum samples that we tested, 456 (52.3%) were positive for denguespecific immunoglobulin M antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Panbio, Sinnamon Park, Queensland, Australia), and more than one third of these were from patients in the 21to ...

We studied the molecular epidemiology of dengue virus type 3 (DENV-3) in Brazil and Paraguay by analyzing the 5' and 3' untranslated regions (5' and 3'UTRs) and the E protein gene of viruses isolated between 2002 and 2004. Both 5' and 3'UTRs were highly conserved. However, the 3'UTR of two isolates from Brazil contained eight nucleotide deletions compared with the remaining 26 viruses. Phylogen...

In the current outbreak, dengue type 1 has been identified in several cases. Initial interpretations of antibody levels (ie. haemagglutination inhibition antibody titres) suggested that dengue types 3 and 4 were causing the current outbreak. Since then, however, more sensitive tests (nucleic acid amplification and virus isolation) have identified only type 1 dengue in the samples, although not ...

A virus belonging to the Flaviviridae group causes dengue haemorrhagic fever. Dengue presenting as acute liver failure is rare. Dengue is endemic in India. The last epidemic of dengue occurred in Delhi in 2003. During this epidemic, 2185 confirmed cases of dengue were reported. Dengue virus serotypes 2 and 3 were responsible for this epidemic. A 19-yr-old male presented to our hospital with the...

OBJECTIVES Production of a recombinant and immunogenic antigen using dengue virus type-3 envelope protein is a key point in dengue vaccine development and diagnostic researches. The goals of this study were providing a recombinant protein from dengue virus type-3 envelope protein and evaluation of its immunogenicity in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS Multiple amino acid sequences of different iso...

After an 18-year absence, dengue virus serotype 3 reemerged in the South Pacific Islands in 2013. Outbreaks in western (Solomon Islands) and eastern (French Polynesia) regions were caused by different genotypes. This finding suggested that immunity against dengue virus serotype, rather than virus genotype, was the principal determinant of reemergence.

In the past 2 decades, dengue has reemerged in Brazil as a significant public health problem. Clinicians demand a diagnostic test with high sensitivity that is applicable during the early symptomatic phase. We aimed to test two distinct molecular methods on samples from suspected dengue cases during an outbreak in Central Brazil. Acute-phase serum specimens from 254 patients suspected of having...

INTRODUCTION Dengue is an arbovirus that continues to cause serious public health problems in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the planet. METHODS In this study, blood samples from children were investigated by RT-PCR, aimed at identifying dengue virus serotypes in Manaus, AM, in 2008 in this infant population. RESULTS DENV-3 was the only serotype identified. CONCLUSIONS In this study...
