The presence in newborns of a mature and functional CD8(+) T cell response to congenital cytomegalovirus infection suggests that the machinery necessary to prime such responses is present in utero and raises questions related to neonatal vaccination.
Currently, there is no evidence whether ganciclovir, or its oral prodrug valganciclovir, penetrates into the cerebrospinal fluid of human infants treated for congenital cytomegalovirus infection. Here, we report a case study providing evidence that ganciclovir, administered as valganciclovir, reaches the infant's cerebrospinal fluid when used at the currently recommended dose for congenital cyt...
A previous cross-sectional serological survey of various age groups (0-55 years) of the Malaysian normal population showed that cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is highly endemic in Malaysia. A total of 1,688 infants (0-4 months) with congenital abnormalities were screened for evidence of congenital CMV infection and the rest of the TORCHES (TOxoplasmosis, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, HErpes simple...
Several viral infections may occasionally induce supraglottic mass lesions, resulting in an obstructive airway emergency. We herein report one such case in a 63-year-old male immunocompromised patient with nephrotic syndrome due to membranous nephropathy who also had ophthalmic herpes zoster with a laryngeal mass, which required urgent intubation and mechanical ventilation. The patient was init...
The lymphocytes of asymptomatic, seropositive donors demonstrated blastogenic responses to early antigens of human cytomegalovirus whether or not antibodies to early antigens were detectable. The lymphocytes of six of nine patients with active cytomegalovirus infections gave stimulation indexes of greater than or equal to 2.00 with antigens of productively infected cells, whereas only two patie...
Recent reports of cytomegalovirus associated colonic and oesophageal ulceration in immunosuppressed patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, have focused attention on the possibility that viral infections may in some cases be the initial insult which leads in susceptible subjects to gastrointestinal ulceration. In this case report we describe how systemic primary infection with ...
Using indirect haemagglutination assay, combined with a collection of blood samples on blotting cards, seroepidemiological surveys of cytomegalovirus infections during early infancy have been done in different populations (French and immigrant) in urban areas. The comparison of CMV antibody status of mothers and their children at 10 months and at 2 years of age enables possible factors of viral...
Of 109 blood samples tested for cytomegalovirus (CMV) antigenemia, 18 (16.5%) were positive. CMV Brite detected 13 and CMV Brite Turbo detected 16 of the 18 positives. There was no significant difference in the number of positive cells detected per sample. The seven discrepant samples contained a median of only one positive cell.
In the absence of a cytomegalovirus (CMV) vaccine, other strategies for prevention of primary infection in pregnancy should be considered. Behavioural interventions have been reported to significantly decrease seroconversion rate among seronegative pregnant women. We report here on a recently completed controlled study in which seronegative women at high risk of infection because of close conta...
