The phytopathogen Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii DC283 causes Stewart's wilt disease in corn after transmission from the corn flea beetle insect vector. Here, we report that the complete annotated genome of P. stewartii DC283 has been fully assembled into one circular chromosome, 10 circular plasmids, and one linear phage.

BACKGROUND Dilute acid pretreatment is a promising pretreatment technology for the biochemical production of ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass. During dilute acid pretreatment, xylan depolymerizes to form soluble xylose monomers and oligomers. Because the xylan found in nature is highly acetylated, the formation of xylose monomers requires two steps: 1) cleavage of the xylosidic bonds, and 2...

Growth of the corn ethanol industry has created a need for alternatives to corn for lactating dairy cows. Concurrent expansion in soydiesel production is expected to increase availability and promote favorable pricing for glycerol, a primary co-product material. The objective of this study was to determine the feeding value of glycerol as a replacement for corn in diets fed to lactating dairy c...

Response surface methodology (RSM), based on a 2(2) full factorial design, evaluated the moisture effects in recovering xylose by diethyloxalate (DEO) hydrolysis. Experiments were carried out in laboratory reactors (10 mL glass ampoules) containing corn stover (0.5 g) properly ground. The ampoules were kept at 160 °C for 90 min. Both DEO concentration and corn stover moisture content were stati...

The current study presents the results of a 13 week feeding study in rats with grain from Roundup Ready corn which is tolerant to the herbicide glyphosate. Herbicide tolerance was accomplished through the introduction of cp4 epsps coding sequences into the corn genome for in planta production of CP4 EPSPS enzymes. Unlike related corn EPSPS enzymes, CP4 EPSPS enzymes are not inhibited by the her...

Zearalenone (ZEN) and ochratoxin A (OTA) are secondary toxic metabolites widely present in grains and grain products. In this study, the effects of electron beam irradiation (EBI) on ZEN and OTA in corn and the quality of irradiated corn were investigated. Results indicated that EBI significantly affected ZEN and OTA. The degradation rates of ZEN and OTA at 10 kGy in solution were 65.6% and 75....

Progress in corn improvement research has produced varieties with higher concentrations of certain nutrients. Normally, corn contains about 3.5% ether extract which is relatively well utilized by pigs. Three varieties of corn with higher oil content and improved fatty acid profile relative to conventional corn were recently developed. The utilization of varieties of corn that contain higher oil...

The results of a 90-day rat feeding study with YieldGard (YieldGard Rootworm Corn is a registered trademark of Monsanto Technology, LLC.) Rootworm corn (MON 863) grain that is protected against feeding damage caused by corn rootworm larvae are presented. Corn rootworm-protection was accomplished through the introduction of a cry3Bb1 coding sequence into the corn genome for in planta production ...

Khorvash, M., Colombatto, D., Beauchemin, K. A., Ghorbani, G. R. and Samei, A. 2006. Use of absorbants and inoculants to enhance the quality of corn silage. Can. J. Anim. Sci. 86: 97–107. This study examined whether inoculants and various absorbent materials could be used during ensiling to reduce effluent losses and improve nutritive value of corn silage. Two corn forages were harvested: conve...

The objective of this research was to study the effect of fat concentration from corn coproducts, fed during the growing phase on DMI, gain, carcass traits, digestibility, and rumen metabolism of steers. Exp. 1: 40 steers (age = 140d; BW = 185 ± 11 kg) were randomly allotted to 1 of 5 dietary treatments: (1) corn-based control (CNT), (2) 0% corn distillers solubles (CDS), (3) 10% CDS, (4) 19% C...
