Previous research has identified robust effects on segmental production of lexical factors like word frequency, predictability or neighborhood density. One question that remains unanswered is whether such lexical effects hold also at the suprasegmental level. This study investigates whether lexical factors such as usage frequency affect tone production in Cantonese. We recorded Cantonese monosy...
A method and algorithm for modeling single-switch scanning for text input is presented. The algorithm uses the layout of a scanning keyboard and a corpus in the form of a word-frequency list to generate codes representing the scan steps for entering words. Scan steps per character (SPC) is computed as a weighted average over the entire corpus. SPC is an absolute measure, thus facilitating compa...
This study aimed at investigating the effect of using an instructional software program of English language on the achievement of secondary students in Jordan. The sample of the study consisted of (212) students distributed randomly on four experimental groups and four control groups. The instruments of the study were an instructional software program for teaching the passive voice and an achie...
Listeners require context to understand the casual pronunciation variants of words that are typical of spontaneous speech [1]. The present study reports two auditory lexical decision experiments, investigating listeners’ use of semantic contextual information in the comprehension of unreduced and reduced words. We found a strong semantic priming effect for low frequency unreduced words, whereas...
This study assesses the potential for computational indices to predict human ratings of essay quality. The results demonstrate that linguistic indices related to type counts, given/new information, personal pronouns, word frequency, conclusion n-grams, and verb forms predict 43% of the variance in human scores of essay quality.
This paper discusses the internal structure of complex Esperanto words (CWs). Using a morphological analyzer, possible affixation and compounding is checked for over 50,000 Esperanto lexemes against a list of 17,000 root words. Morpheme boundaries in the resulting analyses were then checked manually, creating a CW dictionary of 28,000 words, representing 56.4% of the lexicon, or 19.4% of corpus...

This study investigated whether Japanese listeners learning English employ two types of lexical information (word frequency and neighborhood density) when they recognize English words. English words recorded by a native speaker of English and a native speaker of Japanese were presented to Japanese university students in a noise condition. The results of word recognition scores showed that Japan...
The existence of two scripts for Punjabi language has created a script barrier between the Punjabi literature written in India and Pakistan. This research has developed a new system for the first time of its kind for Shahmukhi text without diacritical marks. The purposed system for Shahmukhi to Gurmukhi transliteration has been implemented with various research techniques based on language corp...
