In this paper, the implementation of open-source parallel-version FDTD (Finite-Difference-Time-Domain) software, MEEP, on Texas A&M supercomputers and commercial finite element package, COMSOL, on a single workstation for the design design of nano-optical device is reported. The the computer architecture and performance of both numerical methods on the same design will be briefly described.

This paper presents the simulation of the dual electromagnet Active Magnetic Levitation System realized in the COMSOL Multiphysics software. The mixed mode of Partial Differential and Ordinary Differential Equations is used to realize the levitated object motion. Two control scenarios are given as illustrative example of the working model.

The paper presents an analytical method for the determination of the magnetic force produced by a mini – actuator with permanent magnets. The results are compared with those obtained by performing a numerical field analysis with COMSOL Multiphysics, showing a very good agreement. The study reveals that the actuator has two equilibrium points, one of which is stable and the other one unstable.
