We show how computational complexity might protect the integrity of social choice. We exhibit a voting rule that efficiently computes winners but is computationally resistant to strategic manipulation. It is NP-complete for a manipulative voter to determine how to exploit knowledge of the preferences of others. In contrast, many standard voting schemes can be manipulated with only polynomial co...

This paper examines whether the Peter Principle operates in a large hierarchical financial sector firm. We use a method that allows for variation in optimal effort over stages in the hierarchy, which suggests, at least in the organisation we study, that the mean fall in performance actually understates the effect of the Peter Principle.

Accurately estimating the software size, cost, effort and schedule is probably the biggest challenge facing software developers today. It has major implications for the management of software development because both the overestimates and underestimates have direct impact for causing damage to software companies. Lot of models have been proposed over the years by various researchers for carryin...

A load balancing in a parallel implementation of an algorithm visually simulating hydraulic erosion is introduced. Water flowing over the terrain surface captures particles of material and changes their location that has a great influence to the terrain morphology. The algorithms attempting to solve this processes require a high computational effort. A data parallel approach is used. Data repre...

In spite of its familiar phenomenology, the mechanistic basis for mental effort remains poorly understood. Although most researchers agree that mental effort is aversive and stems from limitations in our capacity to exercise cognitive control, it is unclear what gives rise to those limitations and why they result in an experience of control as costly. The presence of these control costs also ra...

Online bandwidth limitations and fluctuations impose a major challenge in estimating the amount of data to transmit in a given time period. Over or under estimation of bandwidth can jeopardize the visual fidelity of the transmitted data and related multimedia data. We propose a Visual Quality Prediction (VQP) model which supports an adaptive fragmented texture transmission approach taking bandw...

When developing and aiming to achieve success in the arena of mobile commerce, user acceptance is a key aspect for consideration. This study aims to empirically examine some of the factors affecting the acceptance of m-commerce within the context of Saudi Arabia. Based on the revised UTAUT model, the revised model include two particular construct : costs and trust to enhance our understanding o...
