PURPOSE Although the laser has become one of the most commonly used tools for implant dentistry, research is lacking on whether or not the laser causes any changes on the surface of titanium (Ti) implants. The present study analyzed the morphology, composition, crystal structure, and surface roughness changes of machined and anodized Ti surfaces, irradiated with erbium chromium-doped yttrium-sc...

Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser skin resurfacing has been a mainstay of facial rejuvenation since its introduction in the mid 1990s. Recently, a new generation of fractional or microablative CO2 lasers has been introduced to the marketplace. According to the concept of fractional photothermolysis, these lasers ablate only a fraction of the epidermal and dermal architecture in the treatment area. An ...

We present experimental and numerical evidence of synchronization of burst events in two different modulated CO2 lasers. Bursts appear randomly in each laser as trains of large amplitude spikes intercalated by a small amplitude chaotic regime. Experimental data and model show the frequency locking of bursts in a suitable interval of coupling strength. We explain the mechanism of this phenomenon...

Actas Dermosifiliogr. 2008;99:493-501 494 application of 1% atropine has produced a response in some patients,8 but not in others.5,7 Other treatments include the use of CO2 lasers or pulsed dye laser,9 destruction using electrodesiccation with a fine needle electrode, and injections of botulinum toxin.10 In cases where there was an underlying disorder such as hyperthyroidism, resolution of the...

Fused biconic taper (FBT) couplers are essential elements in any fibre-optic communications network. We describe two prototype manufacturing process that produces low-loss fibre tapers and fused FBT coupler devices using CO2 lasers as the heat source instead of a flame, as is the norm in modern manufacturing methods. The methods could potentially be exploited to increase the degree of automatio...

The dental lasers of today have benefited from field of quantum mechanics, initially formulated during the early 1900s by Danish physicist Bohr. The first laser use in endodontics was reported by Weichman & Johnson (1971) who attempted to seal the apical foramen in vitro by means of a high power-infrared (CO2) laser. In May 1990, Myers and Myers developed the first specialized dental laser (pul...

We show the standard two-level continuous-time model of loss-modulated CO2 lasers to display the same regular network of self-similar stability islands known so far to be typically present only in discrete-time models based on mappings. Our results suggest that the two-parameter space of class B laser models and that of a certain class of discrete mappings could be isomorphic.

The clinical applications of thermal sensory and pain thresholds have been very limited due to large intra-individual variations. In the present paper CO2 and argon lasers were used as thermal stimulators, and the different factors (stimulus parameters and skin conditions) affecting the thresholds are described. The intra-individual variations obtained in sensory (9.3%) and pain (4.3%) threshol...

Laser irradiation has numerous favorable characteristics, such as ablation or vaporization, hemostasis, biostimulation (photobiomodulation) and microbial inhibition and destruction, which induce various beneficial therapeutic effects and biological responses. Therefore, the use of lasers is considered effective and suitable for treating a variety of inflammatory and infectious oral conditions. ...

A modified version of the plasma beat-wave accelerator scheme is proposed, based on autoresonant phase locking of the Langmuir wave to the slowly chirped beat frequency of the driving lasers by passage through resonance. Peak electric fields above standard detuning limits seem readily attainable, and the plasma wave excitation is robust to large variations in plasma density or chirp rate. This ...
