Two glass ceramics in the CaO--P2O5--MgO system with the incorporation of K2O or TiO2 oxides were prepared with the goal of using them as potential bone graft substitutes. The incorporation of TiO2 and K2O led to the preparation of specific crystalline phases in the structure of the glass ceramics, which show different degrees of biodegradation. In fact, the 45CaO--45P2O5--5MgO--5K2O has been p...
Introduction: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of glass ceramic insert in the sandwich technique to reduce microleakage in class II composite resin restorations. Methods: Sixty sound human upper second premolars were selected and randomly divided into six groups (n=10). Class II box-only cavities were prepared in distal aspects of each tooth with gingival margin located a...
Chalcogenide glasses have recently attracted much interest due to mainly two reasons. The first stems from their interesting physical and optical properties and consequently of their potential technological applications. A recent review of all these potential applications appeared in the proceedings of the international workshop on amorphous and nanostructured chalcogenides [1]. These applicati...
Chalcogenide glasses (ChGs) are amorphous compounds containing the chalcogen elements (S, Se, Te) and exhibit wide infrared transparency windows. They are easy to synthesize in bulk and thin film forms and their compositional flexibility allows tuning of optical properties such as refractive index making them ideal for infrared photonics. We have studied the material attenuation in ChGs that ar...
The enthalpy relaxation is performed in the glassy Ge22Se78 to understand the dynamic behaviors. The structure of the glass is examined by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra. The dynamic parameters such as the fragility, stretching exponent and non-linear factor are determined. A low fragility of m = 27 is exhibited for the chalcogenide, however, the stretching exponent is found not to have a ...
GeSbS ridge waveguides have recently been demonstrated as a promising mid - infrared platform for integrated waveguide - based chemical sensing and photodetection. To date, their nonlinear optical properties remain relatively unexplored. In this paper, we characterize the nonlinear optical properties of GeSbS glasses, and show negligible nonlinear losses at 1.55 μm. Using self - phase modulatio...
We have demonstrated what we believe to be the first chalcogenide glass racetrack microresonator using a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor-compatible lift-off technique with thermally evaporated As(2)S(3) films. The device simultaneously features a small footprint of 0.012 mm x 0.012 mm, a cavity Q (quality factor) of 10,000, and an extinction ratio of 32 dB. These resonators exhibit a ve...
We demonstrate micrometer scale mid-IR lenses for integrated optics, using solution-based inkjet printing techniques and subsequent processing. Arsenic sulfide spherical microlenses with diameters of 10-350 μm and focal lengths of 10-700 μm have been fabricated. The baking conditions can be used to tune the precise focal length.
The effect of iron oxide content on the crystallisation of a diopside glass–ceramic glaze was investigated using a glass–ceramic frit in the K2O–ZnO–MgO–CaO–Al2O3–SiO2 system and a granite waste glass. Measurements by X-ray diffraction (XRD) combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and EDX microanalysis showed that the distribution of Fe ions among different crystalline phases such as f...
