The whole-genome sequence of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) cv. 'Francesco' was determined using a combination of different new-generation multiplex sequencing platforms. The total length of the non-redundant sequences was 568,887,315 bp, consisting of 45,088 scaffolds, which covered 91% of the 622 Mb carnation genome estimated by k-mer analysis. The N50 values of contigs and scaffolds we...

Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) is an important flower crop, having substantial commercial value as a cut-flower due to the long vase-life and wide array of flower colors and forms. Standard carnation varieties perform well under cool climates but are very susceptible to high temperatures which adversely affect the yield and the quality of the cut-flowers. Despite several studies of carnat...

Recombination in RNA viruses is considered to play a major role as a driving force in virus variability to counterbalance loss in fitness that can be due to the accumulation of detrimental mutations. Studies on mixed infections are pertinent for understanding the role of recombination in virus evolution. They also provide important baseline information for studying the biosafety of plants expre...

This is the first report of chrysanthemum virus B (CVB) and chlorotic mottle viroid (CChMVd) on Chrysanthemum × morifolium cultivars, in South Africa. Samples were collected from plants showing vein clearing, mosaic chlorosis, Western Cape province. RNAtag-seq was applied indicated presence CVB all four samples co-infection with CChMVd one sample. The confirmed using RT-PCR Sanger sequencing.

Tomato bushy stunt virus particles have previously been physically and chemically well characterized. Different strains, however, are known to have different host plants and symptoms, and they can be distinguished serologically. In an attempt to correlate this behavior with physicochemical properties, we have performed a comparative study on isolates of four of the main variants of this virus (...

Chrysanthemum chlorotic mottle viroid (CChMVd) is an RNA of 398-399 nt that can adopt hammerhead structures in both polarity strands. We have identified by Northern-blot hybridization a nonsymptomatic strain (CChMVd-NS) that protects against challenge inoculation with the symptomatic strain (CChMVd-S). Analysis of CChMVd-NS cDNA clones has revealed a size and sequence very similar to those of t...

Viruses are most frequently discovered because they cause disease. To expand knowledge of plant-associated viruses beyond these narrow constraints, non-cultivated plants of the Tallgrass Prairie of the United States were systematically surveyed for evidence of viruses. This report discusses putative viruses of the family Secoviridae identified by the survey. Sequence analysis suggests the prese...
