Murine monoclonal ant ibodies against carc inoembryonic antigen (CEA) derived from a colonic tumor were analyzed by radioimmunoassay for reactivity with CEA and the CEA-related antigens, meconium antigen (MA) and nonspecif ic cross-reacting antigen. Ant ibody-ant igen binding profiles revealed three classes of hybridomas. The Class I antibody, NP-1, recognized an epitope shared among all three ...
A glycoprotein has been isolated from the colonic lavages of healthy individuals that is immunologically equivalent to carcinoembryonic antigen purified from tumor tissue. The NH2-terminal sequence of the glycoprotein from normal colon lavages is Lys-Leu-Thr-lle-Glu-Ser-Thr-Pro-Phe-(Asn)-Val-Ala-Glu-Gly-Lys-Glu-Val-(Leu,lle)-(Leu,lle)-(Leu,lle)-Val-(His,Arg?)-?-(Leu,lle). This is homologous to ...
Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), orosomucoid beta2 microglobulin, and alpha fetoprotein were quantified in the pleural fluid and serum of 58 hospitalized consecutive patients in order to differentiate malignant from nonmalignant effusions. Cytologic examination of the effusions was also performed. The orosomucoid assay was the most helpful in identifying malignant effusions; higher values (>100 ...
Studies in both patients and mice have been carried out using heterologous antibody directed at secreted products of tumors. In preliminary therapeutic studies in patients with drug-resistant choriocarcinoma and malignant teratoma, heterologous anti-human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) and anti-alpha-fetoprotein have been combined with continued cytotoxic chemotherapy. The results to date, altho...
Tailgut cysts (TGCs) are rare congenital cysts that occur in the retrorectal or presacral spaces. Although most tailgut cysts have been reported as benign, there have been at least 9 cases associated with malignant change. We report herein on an unusual case of a 40-year-old woman with a carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)-producing adenocarcinoma arising within a TGC who underwent surgical resectio...

SUMMARY A membrane-associated antigen (or antigens) of the normal colonic mucosa was found to be lacking in carcinomas and diminished in polyps of the colon. There seems to be a correlation between the loss of this antigen and the reappearance of the carcinoembryonic antigen of gastrointestinal cancers.
