We describe the “action-angle” integrable system underlying the structure of double-extremal black holes. This implies the existence of a canonical transformation from BPS to non-BPS black holes. We give examples of such canonical transformation for STU and for E7(7)-invariant black holes. ∗ Email: [email protected]
We identify the states in string theory which are responsible for the entropy of nearextremal rotating four-dimensional black holes in N = 8 supergravity. For black holes far from extremality (with no rotation), the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is exactly matched by a mysterious duality invariant extension of the formulas derived for near-extremal black holes states.
The comparison of the black hole mass function (BHMF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) relics with the measured mass function of the massive black holes in galaxies provides strong evidence for the growth of massive black holes being dominated by mass accretion. We derive the Eddington ratio distributions as functions of black hole mass and redshift from a large AGN sample with measured Eddingto...
If string theory describes nature, then charged black holes are not described by the Reissner-Nordstrøm solution. This solution must be modified to include a massive dilaton. In the limit of vanishing dilaton mass, the new solution can be found by a generalization of the Harrison transformation for the Einstein-Maxwell equations. These two solution generating transformations and the resulting b...
In TeV-scale gravity scenarios with large extra dimensions, black holes may be produced at future colliders. Good arguments have been made for why general relativistic black holes may be just out of reach of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). However, in weaklycoupled string theory, highly excited string states – string balls – could be produced at the LHC with high rates and decay thermally, not...
In Einstein-Maxwell theory black holes are uniquely determined by their mass, their charge and their angular momentum. This is no longer true in EinsteinYang-Mills theory. We discuss sequences of neutral and charged SU(N) EinsteinYang-Mills black holes, which are static spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat, and which carry Yang-Mills hair. Furthermore, in Einstein-Maxwell theory static...
We investigate stationary, rotationally symmetric solutions of a recently proposed three-dimensional theory of massive gravity. Along with BTZ black holes, we also obtain warped AdS3 black holes, and (for a critical value of the cosmological constant) AdS2 × S as solutions. The entropy, mass and angular momentum of these black holes are computed. ∗Email: [email protected]
Charged extremal black holes cannot fully evaporate through the Hawking effect and are thus long lived. Over their lifetimes, these black holes take part in a variety of astrophysical processes, including many that lead to their eventual destruction. This paper explores the various events that shape the life of extremal black holes and calculates the corresponding time scales.
We investigate the stability of higher dimensional rotating black holes against scalar perturbations. In particular, we make a thorough numerical and analytical analysis of six-dimensional black holes, not only in the low rotation regime but in the high rotation regime as well. Our results suggest that higher dimensional Kerr black holes are stable against scalar perturbations, even in the ultr...
Of all the legacies of Einstein’s general theory of relativity, none is more fascinating than black holes. While we now take their existence almost for granted, black holes were viewed for much of the 20th century as mathematical curiosities with no counterparts in nature. Einstein himself never believed in black holes and wrote two papers in which he argued against their existence. Einstein’s ...
