Borrelia hermsii, a spirochete and an etiological agent of relapsing fever, was cultivated in modified Kelly medium. Studies of the action of penicillin on B. hermsii strain HS1 revealed the following: (i) the in vitro minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of benzylpenicillin for this strain were 0.4 and 3.1 nmol/ml (0.15 and 1.1 micrograms/ml), respectively; (...
It has been shown by Beyer et al. in a recent series of papers ( 1 to 4) that the compound 4-carboxyphenylmethanesulfonanilide, known as Caronamide, is effective in increasing the penicillin plasma concentration and in prolonging the period of time over which detectable penicillin plasma concentrations are maintained following administration of penicillin, orally and by venoclysis, to dogs. In ...
Combinations of penicillin plus tobramycin have been compared with penicillin plus gentamicin against 27 strains of enterococci isolated from blood cultures. Penicillin plus gentamicin was synergistic against all strains. The combination of penicillin plus tobramycin was equally effective against strains of Streptococcus facalis, but was ineffective against all four strains of S. faecium tested.
Penicillin-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae from 405 patients were studied by determination of penicillin minimal inhibitory concentrations an penicillinase production. Eighteen percent were identified as penicillin-producing N. gonorrhoeae and the mean minimal inhibitory concentration, for all except penicillin-producing strains, was 0.805 micrograms/ml.
Penicillin-binding proteins were identified in Borrelia burgdorferi membranes. A 94-kilodalton penicillin-binding protein was the first to be labeled with tritiated penicillin and was the first band to disappear in a competition experiment. Its binding ability was destroyed when membranes were preboiled. In addition, several of these penicillin-binding proteins comigrated with bands previously ...
A new empirical model based on the degree of freedom analysis has been proposed to model Penicillin G and Penicillin V. The model has three temperature independent constants. Penicillin G and Penicillin V – Supercritical Carbon dioxide binary system was successfully correlated with the new model.
BACKGROUND The clinical impact of penicillin resistance on the outcome of pneumococcal pneumonia has remained controversial. We performed a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies to examine the association between penicillin resistance and short-term all-cause mortality for pneumococcal pneumonia. METHODS We retrieved studies published in any language by a comprehensive search of the Med...
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Beta haemolytic streptococci (BHS), especially group A are still highly susceptible to penicillin. One possible explanation for this could be reduced growth capability in penicillin resistant BHS mutants. The present study was therefore undertaken to analyze the growth rates of BHS with decreased susceptibility to penicillin. METHODS Serial passages in the medium with ...
The effect of intracisternal inoculation of bacteria on the choroid plexus system, which transports penicillin from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to blood, was studied in vitro and in vivo. Meningeal and choroid plexus inflammations as well as CSF pleocytosis were induced in rabbits with intracisternal inoculations of Hemophilus influenzae or Staphylococcus aureus. At various times after bacterial ...
