The genus Mycobacterium comprises a large number of well-characterized species, several of which are human and animal pathogens. Here, we report the whole-genome sequence of Mycobacterium sp. strain 012931, a fish pathogen responsible for huge losses in aquaculture farms in Japan. The strain was isolated from a marine fish, yellowtail (Seriola quinqueradiata).

We describe a hypervirulent clone of group B Streptococcus serotype III, subtype 4, sequence type 283, that caused invasive disease with a predilection for meningitis in Hong Kong during 1993-2012. The organism is associated with high mortality and increased summer prevalence and is linked to diseased fish from freshwater fish farms.

Macrophage aggregate (MA) morphometry and pigment composition are believed to be dependent on the species, age, and health status of the fish. The aim of this study was to characterize a "normal" morphometry baseline of spleen and kidney MAs in blue gourami Trichogaster trichopterus and freshwater angelfish Pterophyllum scalare. Three size-classes of clinically normal fish were analyzed. Blue g...

Grass carp is an herbivorous species, which is actually popular in Iran. Monogenean parasites, particularly members of the family Dactylogyridae, have been one of the main causes of mortalities in Iranian fish farms and therefore they have been subject of many studies in Iran. The main aim of the present study was to describe morphological and molecular characteristics of monogenean parasites r...

Integrated fish farming combines livestock production with fish farming. Animal manure is shed directly into a fish pond as fertilizer and supports the growth of photosynthetic organisms. The livestock, mainly chickens and pigs, is often fed feed containing growth promoters. In this study we investigated the impact of integrated fish farming on the levels of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in ...

a disease outbreak occurred in june 2012 among mud loach cultured on pond farms in jangseong-gun, jeollanam-do, korea. mortality rates reached up to 1.2% in the farm per day. typical clinical signs were bleeding ulcer at the middle portion of head and haemorrhagic erosion of the operculum. based on biochemical characteristics, the causative bacterium isolated from diseased fish was identified a...

The genus Tenacibaculum encompasses several species pathogenic for marine fish. Tenacibaculum dicentrarchi and "Tenacibaculum finnmarkense" (Quotation marks denote species that have not been validly named.) were retrieved from skin lesions of farmed fish such as European sea bass or Atlantic salmon. They cause a condition referred to as tenacibaculosis and severe outbreaks and important fish lo...

Sea lice infest both farmed and wild salmonids to the potential detriment of aquaculture and angling interests. Several reviews have recently considered information concerning interactions between salmon farms and wild salmonids (e.g. Revie et al. 2009; Costello 2009; Whelan, 2010). Here, the evidence available to assess the likelihood and scale of impact of sea lice from salmon farms on Scotti...

The parasites that normally cause fish disease under farming condition possess a direct life cycle with no need to intermediate hosts for dissemination. The ensuing infection can therefore spread rapidly inducing more damaging lesions in the external parts of host especially the gills. In this study, in order to isolate and identify foreign parasites of phytophagous fish in Guilan province, 4 f...

Climate change and species invasions interact in nature, disrupting biological communities. Based on this knowledge, we simultaneously assessed the effects of climate change on the native distribution of the Amazonian fish Colossoma macropomum as well as on its invasiveness across river basins of South America, using ecological niche modeling. We used six niche models within the ensemble foreca...
