OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of atrial pacing in the prevention of atrial fibrillation following cardiovascular surgery. BACKGROUND Although pharmacologic therapy has been used to help prevent postoperative atrial fibrillation, it suffers from limited efficacy and adverse effects. In the nonoperative setting, novel pacing strategies have been shown to redu...

A 25-year-old woman with a 5-year history of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia underwent an electrophysiologic procedure. The baseline sinus cycle length, atrial–His-bundle (AH) interval, and His-bundle–ventricular (HV) interval were 750, 60, and 50 msec, respectively. Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia with a cycle length of 320 msec was induced by programmed atrial stimulation with...

Abstract We present the case of a 56-year-old man affected by heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and permanent atrial fibrillation, who previously underwent CRT-D implant left ventricular stimulation delivered an epicardial pacing lead due to unfavourable CS anatomy. upgraded this system bundle branch pacing. The LBB was connected plug in device order deliver multisite pr...

BACKGROUND Although overdrive pacing for treating atrial flutter is well established, the efficacy of device-based atrial pacing for treating spontaneous atrial tachyarrhythmias in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) is unknown. This study evaluated the efficacy of novel pacing therapies for treating atrial tachyarrhythmias in patients receiving a dual-chamber ICD to tre...

Long-term pervenous right atrial pacing has been used in five patients with intact atrioventricular (A-V) conduction for the treatment of refractory ventricular arrhythmias in two subjects and marked sinus bradyeardia in three, two of whom also had paroxysmal supraventricular arrhythmias. The pervenous method was used to avoid a thoracotomy, and atrial pacing was chosen over ventricular pacing ...

AIMS The aim of this retrospective analysis was to investigate VDD mode survival, development of atrial tachyarrhythmias (AT), and long-term atrial sensing performance of VDD pacing systems. METHODS AND RESULTS We implanted single-lead VDD pacemakers in patients with isolated atrioventricular block and performed a retrospective analysis of 307 patients who had their devices implanted between ...

In this issue of EUROPACE, Blanc et al. [1] present data from one of the five PIPAF (Pacing in Prevention of Atrial Fibrillation) studies which assess the effects of pacing on prevention of atrial tachyarrhythmias (ATs) using different atrial pacing sites (conventional sites, septal, dual site right atrial and biatrial) alone or in combination with one or more dedicated pacing algorithms [2]. T...

We present a case of a 50-year-old patient with DDD pacing failure who underwent atrial lead extraction. The lead was implanted 15 years ago, and 4 months ago it dislodged into the subclavian vein following a fracture. The lead was removed via the femoral vein approach using a Cook Medical device (Byrd Femoral Workstation, Dotter basket) and pigtail catheter.

OBJECTIVE To test the hypotheses that adaptive rate atrial (AAIR) pacing: significantly increases maximal exercise capacity, and results in significant suppression of supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmia compared with fixed rate atrial (AAI) pacing. DESIGN Prospective, randomised, single blind, crossover study with maximal treadmill exercise testing and 24 hour ambulatory electrocardio...

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has been shown to improve quality of life, increase cardiac output, enhance functional class, and reduce mortality in patients with cardiomyopathy and mechanical dyssynchrony. For pacemaker-dependent patients, the addition of a left ventricular (LV) lead most often leads to a reduction of QRS morphology of 30%, compared with right ventricular pacing alone...
