Introduction: Coarctation of the aorta is one most commonly encountered congenital heart diseases accounting for about 7% cases. With early childhood diagnosis and development corrective surgical intervention, undiagnosed aortic coarctation presenting as sudden unexpected death today a rarity. Fatal complications such rupture or dissection, endocarditis ruptured cerebral aneurysm can arise when...
A 56-year-old female patient was transferred due to the presence of a left supraclavicular pulsatile mass. Further work-up was performed to confirm diagnosis. Angiography and computed tomography were also performed. The anatomy of the thoracic aorta suggested an unknown and untreated aortic coarctation. A second aortic narrowing was identified at the aortic arch, a result of elongation of the a...
A 12-year-old Chinese girl was demonstrated multivessel distortion and malformation: aortic coarctation with the narrowest lumen diameter measuring of 4 mm located between the left common carotid artery and the left subclavian artery, a huge and thin-walled aneurysm is connected to the coarctation, and the descending aorta was distorted. Cerebrovascular revealed distorted arteries and a complet...
We report the unusual presentation of coarctation of the aorta with facial nerve palsy in an infant and a child. The facial nerve palsy and hypertension resolved spontaneously after relief of the aortic coarctation. Our two cases are the first reports of unidentified coarctation of the aorta presenting as facial nerve palsy, with the infant being the youngest to be reported.
BACKGROUND Diagnosis of aortic coarctation is important as it is a difficult condition to evaluate, especially in adults. A Doppler echocardiographic index could provide a simple tool to evaluate coarctation. This study was performed to compare Doppler echocardiographic profiles before and after stenting and to assess the diagnostic value of a complete list of echocardiographic indices for dete...
Background & Aim: Coarctation accounts for about 5-9% of congenital heart diseases and is the fifth common congenital heart disorder in children. Approximately 90% of untreated patients die before the age of 50 and about half of deaths occur before the age of 10 due to heart failure. The main goal of this study is assessing the frequency of reccurent coarctation after repair and determining...
Late complications after surgical repair of aortic coarctation are not uncommon. Among these complications pseudoaneurysms are the most frequent complications, occurring between 3 and 38%. Reoperation in these patients is associated with high morbidity and mortality. In the last decade, endovascular techniques emerged as an alternative to conventional surgery with excellent results. We report t...
Restenosis rarely develops after surgical correction of coarctation of the aorta in adults. Late morbidity is usually related to residual hypertension or progressive aortic valve disease. A patient in whom symptoms and signs of recurrent coarctation developed 19 years after initial graft repair is described. Dehiscence of the original silk suture line was found at operation. Extensive thrombus ...
PURPOSE To show that 4D Flow is a clinically viable tool for evaluation of collateral blood flow and demonstration of distorted blood flow patterns in patients with treated and untreated aortic coarctation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Time-resolved, 3D phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (4D Flow) was used to assess blood flow in the thoracic aorta of 34 individuals: 26 patients with co...
Real-time cross-sectional echocardiographic sector scan examinations were performed from a suprasternal notch location to image aortic anatomy in 15 children (ages 1 day to 21 years) who were subsequently shown at cardiac catheterization to have coarctation of the descending thoracic aorta. The resulting echocardiographic images of the ascending, transverse and descending aorta imaged juxtaduct...
