An exemplary peptide has been synthesized for the first time by an automated solid-phase instrumentation which utilized the new Adpoc (1 (1-adamantyl) -1 -methylethoxycarbonyl-) group for protection of the a-amino groups of the amino acids. The pentapeptide, thymopoietin-(32-36) was synthesized, and shown to be pure by criteria including HPLC. Using a Cytoxan (cyclophosphamide) model system for...

The antigenic sites A and C (the G-H loop and the C terminus, respectively) in VP1 of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) have been considered the immunodominant regions of the virus involved in the induction of protection. Other antigenic sites have been described but their involvement in protection has not been established. Here we report that two closely related but serologically different F...

The use of benzoyl, isobutyryl and dimethylaminomethylidene groups for the protection of the exocyclic amino function of 2-aminopurine during oligonucleotide synthesis has been investigated. Best results in the synthesis were obtained with the monomers of 2-aminopurine protected with the isobutyryl group.

Cholic acid 2a has been converted into two new orthogonally-protected triamino scaffolds, 13 and 14. The synthesis proceeds via the bis-Boc-NH-substituted azide 10, for which an improved preparation is described. After removal of the Boc groups, the two axial amines are differentiated through a novel monoprotection employing 1-(2-nitrobenzenesulfonyloxy)-benzotriazole 29. Regioselectivity of > ...

One of the modern techniques of mixture separation is the application of liquid membranes. They reveal the ability of selective transport of mixture components in which a liquid membrane constitutes a separate phase which separates two other liquid or gas phases. This property of membranes makes them useful in the textile and food industries, in hydrometallurgy, medicine, biotechnology, environ...

Four plasmids encoding different C terminally and N terminally truncated pertussis toxin S1 subunits of Bordetella pertussis were constructed and tested for inducibility of protection against pertussis toxin in mice after DNA-based immunization. The region encoding an N-terminal 180-amino-acid fragment of the S1 subunit had the most potent ability to induce protective immunity.

A direct asymmetric hydrogenation of unprotected enamino esters and amides is described. Catalyzed by Rh complexes with Josiphos-type chiral ligands, this method gives beta-amino esters and amides in high yield and high ee (93-97% ee). No acyl protection/deprotection is required.

Synthesis of first generation non-hydrolysable C-phosphonate GPI analogs, viz., 6-O-(2-amino-2-deoxy-α-d-glucopyranosyl)-d-myo-inositol-1-O-(sn-3,4-bis(palmitoyloxy)butyl-1-phosphonate) and 6-O-(2-amino-2-deoxy-α-d-glucopyranosyl)-d-myo-inositol-1-O-(sn-2,3-bis(palmitoyloxy)propyl-1-phosphonate) 23b, is reported. The target compounds were synthesized by the coupling of α-pseudodisaccharide 21 w...

Bifidobacterium longum, a Gram-positive rod-shaped anaerobic bacterium, inhabits the human gastrointestinal tract and contributes significantly to oligosaccharide production, amino acid metabolism, and protection against intestinal inflammation. Here, we report the whole-genome sequence of B. longum, which was isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of a healthy Indian adult.

Aspergillus sydowii MG49 produces a 30-kDa exosplitting xylobiohydrolase during growth on xylan. A specific chemical modification and substrate protection analysis of purified xylanase provided evidence that tryptophan and carboxy and amino groups are present at the catalytic site of this enzyme. Thermal inactivation of the xylanase occurs because of irreversible polymolecular aggregation, whic...
