Blastomonas is a strictly aerobic bacteriochlorophyll a-producing genus within the alpha-4 Proteobacteria. Here we report the first genome sequence from this genus. The draft genome of Blastomonas sp. strain AAP53 contains a split photosynthesis gene cluster and two gene clusters encoding a flagellar system. Genes for the autotrophic CO2 fixation pathway are absent.

Sediment microbial communities play an important role in lake trophic status. This study determined millions of Illumina reads (16S rRNA gene amplicons) to compare the bacterial communities in moderately eutrophic, lightly eutrophic, and moderately trophic regions using a technically consistent approach. The results indicated that the sediments from moderately eutrophic and trophic lake had the...

The ability to recognize and predict non-sigma54 promoters in the alphaproteobacteria is not well developed. In this study, 25 experimentally verified Sinorhizobium meliloti promoter sequences were compiled and used to predict the location of other related promoters in the S. meliloti genome. Fourteen candidate predictions were targeted for verification and of these at least 12 proved to be gen...

Caulobacter is a distinctive genus of prosthecate bacteria. Because caulobacters adhere to surfaces and are found in diverse locales, their role in oligotrophic environments and bacterial biofilm communities is of interest. The phylogenetic relationships of a group of marine and freshwater caulobacters were examined in part to address whether the taxonomic grouping of these bacteria (based prim...

In the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, microorganisms colonize the pore spaces of exposed rocks and are thereby protected from the desiccating environmental conditions on the surface. These cryptoendolithic communities have received attention in microscopy and culture-based studies but have not been examined by molecular approaches. We surveyed the microbial biodiversity of selected cryptoen...
