Bacteria from the genus Acinetobacter are opportunistic pathogens and cause harm to humans. In this study a new bacterial strain designated as Acinetobacter sp. 33F was isolated from municipal solid waste (MSW) leachate. This bacterium is useful as it degrades and utilizes dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as sole carbon source. Acinetobacter sp. 33F degraded 82.45% of the initial 2000 mg/L of DBP in min...

A 30 month prospective study of Acinetobacter species encountered in the Central Pathology Laboratory of St James's Hospital, Dublin, Ireland, was conducted to investigate the prevalence and molecular epidemiology of carbapenem resistance in such isolates. Acinetobacter genomic species 3 (AG3) was found to be the predominant Acinetobacter species (45/114, 39 %) in our institution. A total of 11...

Acinetobacter is one of the important opportunistic pathogens involved in hospital acquired infection. They cause various types of human infections leading to morbidity and mortality. Of these Acinetobacter species, Acinetobacter baumannii is the most prevalent in clinical specimens causing pneumonia. It is very common among inpatients admitted in ICUs for various ailments. Around hundred sputu...

Acinetobacter species are emerging as an important nosocomial pathogen. Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter spp. has limited the option for effective treatment. Although carbapenems are effective for the treatment of such infections, resistance to this drug has recently been reported. This study was undertaken to assess resistance to carbapenem in clinical isolates of Acinetobacter spp. from hosp...

Acinetobacter baumannii is generally the most frequently isolated Acinetobacter species. Sequence analysis techniques allow reliable identification of Acinetobacter isolates at the species level. Forty-eight clinical isolates of Acinetobacter spp. were obtained from blood cultures at Tohoku University Hospital. These isolates were identified at the species level by partial sequencing of the RNA...

At least 19 genomic species are recognized as constituting the genus Acinetobacter. However, little is known about the natural reservoirs of the various members of the genus. An epidemiological study was therefore performed to investigate the colonization with Acinetobacter spp. of the skin and mucous membranes of 40 patients hospitalized in a cardiology ward and 40 healthy controls. Single sam...

Two Gram-stain-negative, non-fermentative bacterial strains, designated 11-0202(T) and 11-0607, were isolated from soil in South Korea, and four others, LUH 13522, LUH 8638, LUH 10268 and LUH 10288, were isolated from a beet field in Germany, soil in the Netherlands, and sediment of integrated fish farms in Malaysia and Thailand, respectively. Based on 16S rRNA, rpoB and gyrB gene sequences, th...

INTRODUCTION Acinetobacter spp. is an important opportunistic pathogen responsible for increasing number of nosocomial infections. The majority of infection are of epidemic origin, and treatment has become difficult because many strains are resistant to a wide range of antibiotics. The aim of this study was to investigate the local infections caused by various species of the genus Acinetobacter...

Acinetobacter baumannii resistance to carbapenems is of global concern. Here, we report the 3.9 Mb draft genome of a cerebrospinal fluid isolate of A. baumannii strain 10441_14 which is carbapenem resistant and belongs to ST451. This genome will further help in the understanding of the drug resistance mechanism, epidemiology, and pathology of this bacterium.

Thirty-one Acinetobacter baumannii strains, comprising 14 strains from 14 outbreaks in different northwestern European cities and 17 sporadic strains, were compared by investigating various properties of the strains including biotype, antibiogram, cell envelope protein electrophoretic profile, ribotype pattern, and the band pattern generated by a novel genomic fingerprinting method, named AFLP,...
