Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is an allergic disorder caused by an opportunistic fungal pathogen, Aspergillus fumigatus (AFU:). Lung surfactant proteins SP-A and SP-D can interact with the glycosylated antigens and allergens of AFU:, inhibit specific IgE binding to these allergens, and block histamine release from sensitized basophils. We have now examined the therapeutic effec...

Introduction In Canada the use of Omalizumab is restricted to patients with moderate to severe allergic asthma. However there are some cases reports showing its effectiveness in other conditions like chronic urticaria, ABPA and patients with nasal polyps and asthma. Although there are also reports of using omalizumab in patients with cystic fibrosis and ABPA, there are not controlled trials con...

Isavuconazole is a new triazole that is approved for primary therapy of invasive aspergillosis. We provide the first report of a patient with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) who was successfully treated with isavuconazole with marked improvement and minimal adverse effects. We further review the literature on antifungal management of ABPA.

Background Aspergillus sensitization (AS) and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) can occur as a cause of permanent lung damage in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and non-CF bronchiectasis. Objective The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of AS and ABPA in patients with CF and non-CF bronchiectasis in southwestern Iran. Methods This cross-sectional study was cond...

OBJECTIVE Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a complicating factor of cystic fibrosis which can result in a devastating combination as lung disease progresses. The overlap between the signs and symptoms of the two conditions makes diagnosis problematic, even if standardized criteria are used. The objective of this study was to identify, in a group of cystic fibrosis patients, cas...

Aspergillosis of the respiratory tract has diverse manifestations that range from hypersensitivity disorders to rapidly invasive disseminated disease. These can be classified into 3 distinct clinical categories, viz. allergic aspergillosis, saprophytic colonization, and invasive aspergillosis (Table 1). Different presentations of the allergic form, usually seen in atopic individuals, include As...

We report a case of a 37-year-old mild asthmatic male presenting with fever, productive cough and chest pain. The chest x-ray showed a multilobular perihilar shadow of the right lung with a mass-like appearance, confirmed by the CT-scan. He was diagnosed with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). ABPA usually manifests as chronic asthma, recurrent pulmonary infiltrates and bronchiecta...

A 47-year-old man with a history of mild asthma presented with hemoptysis attributed to a large multiloculated cavitary mycetoma. Peripheral blood eosinophilia of 43 percent led to the diagnosis of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). Treatment of ABPA with prednisone led to resolution of an upper lobe infiltrate and a dramatic reduction in the total serum IgE level. Evaluation over ...

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a complex clinical entity resulting from an allergic immune response to Aspergillus species, and most often occurs in patients with asthma. ABPA is rarely observed in the absence of asthma, which is, in fact, the principal criterion for its diagnosis. Our patient was a 53-year-old woman with no history of bronchial asthma. She presented with a 1...
