We study 4d simplicial quantum gravity in the dynamical triangulation approach with a non-trivial class of measures. We find that the measure contribution plays an important role, influencing the phase diagram and the nature of the (possible) critical theory. The key to membrane theory is to enlarge the diffeomorphism group until 4D gravity becomes almost topological. Just one ghost survives and its central charges can cancel against matter. A simple bosonic membrane emerges, but its flat D = 28 target space is unstable. Adding supersym-metry ought to give calculable (2,2) membranes in 12 target dimensions, but (2,1) membranes won't work.
We discuss the “gravitationally dressed” beta functions in the Gross– Neveu model interacting with 2d Liouville theory and in SU(N) gauge theory interacting with the conformal sector of 4d quantum gravity. We propose a model which represents a four-dimensional version of Ponzano and Regge’s three-dimensional euclidean quantum gravity. In particular we show that the exponential of the euclidean Einstein-Regge action for a 4d-discretized block is given, in the semiclassical limit, by a gaussian integral of a suitable 12j-symbol. Possible developments of this result are discussed.
