Low-cost and rescue treatments for Helicobacter pylori infections involve combinations of several drugs including tetracycline. Resistance to tetracycline has recently emerged in H. pylori. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of two tetracycline-resistant clinical isolates (MIC = 64 microg/ml) were determined and compared to the consensus H. pylori 16S rRNA sequence. One isolate had four nucleotide sub...

Bacteroidales species were detected in (tap) water samples from treatment plants with three different PCR assays. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the sequences had an environmental rather than fecal origin. We conclude that assays for Bacteroidales 16S rRNA genes are not specific enough to discern fecal contamination of drinking water in the Netherlands.

Uncultured predominant Bacillus ribotype DA001 in Dutch Drentse A grassland soils, as revealed by its 16S rRNA sequence, was detected in soil by fluorescent whole-cell in situ hybridization. A prominent rod-shaped cell type was identified in bacterial suspensions prepared from soil by a multiple 16S rRNA probing approach.

During a molecular phylogenetic survey of extremely acidic (pH < 1), metal-rich acid mine drainage habitats in the Richmond Mine at Iron Mountain, Calif., we detected 16S rRNA gene sequences of a novel bacterial group belonging to the order Rickettsiales in the Alphaproteobacteria. The closest known relatives of this group (92% 16S rRNA gene sequence identity) are endosymbionts of the protist A...

To the best of our knowledge, little information is available regarding the presence of Anaplasma species in camels in Iran. This study sought to investigate the presence of Anaplasma species by microscopy and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays in 100 healthy dromedaries (Camelus dromedarius) arriving for slaughter. The microscopic examination of Giemsa-stained blood films revealed that Ana...

Despite the potential for many possible secondary-structure conformations, the native sequence of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is able to find the correct and universally conserved core fold. This study reports a computational analysis investigating two mechanisms that appear to constrain rRNA secondary-structure conformational space: ribosomal proteins and rRNA sequence composition. The analysis was c...

The use of the 16S rRNA gene for identification of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) provides a faster and better ability to accurately identify them in addition to contributing significantly in the discovery of new species. Despite their associated problems, many rely on the use of public sequence databases for sequence comparisons. To best evaluate the taxonomic status of NTM species submitte...

Although the type species of the genus Thermoanaerobium, Thermoanaerobium brockii, was transferred to Thermoanaerobacter, Thermoanaerobium acetigenum was not transferred. Therefore, Thermoanaerobium acetigenum should be reclassified. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and re-examination of physiological properties of the type strain, X6B(T) (=DSM 7040(T) = ATCC BAA-1149(T)), we propose th...

A fosmid library with inserts containing approximately 40 kb of marine bacterial DNA (J. L. Stein, T. L. Marsh, K. Y. Wu, H. Shizuya, and E. F. DeLong, J. Bacteriol. 178:591-599, 1996) yielded four clones with 16S rRNA genes from the order Planctomycetales. Three of the clones belong to the Pirellula group and one clone belongs to the Planctomyces group, based on phylogenetic and signature nucl...

The diversity of the predominant bacteria in the human gastrointestinal tract was studied by using 16S rRNA-based approaches. PCR amplicons of the V6 to V8 regions of fecal 16S rRNA and ribosomal DNA (rDNA) were analyzed by temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE). TGGE of fecal 16S rDNA amplicons from 16 individuals showed different profiles, with some bands in common. Fecal samples fro...
