Thirty-six cultigens of tomato were evaluated for resistance against Meloidogyne javanica and four races of M. incognita with standards and parameters adopted by the International Meloidogyne Project. Most cultigens were susceptible to the nematodes, including some that were previously reported to be resistant to these nematodes. Ten accessions, namely Pusa-120, Calmart VFN, Panjab 6.NR-7, EC17...
Negative charges on the outer cuticular surface of Meloidogyne javanica females were visualized with electron microscope labelling techniques. Evidence is presented that the electronegative charge is not borne on neuraminic acid. Ruthenium red staining indicated acid mucopolysaccharides on the outer surface. A surface coat, or glycocalyx, external to the outer cuticle membrane was demonstrated.
The genus Meloidogyne is one of the most economically damaging plant parasitic nematodes on a worldwide basis. To date, only dragon fruits in Brazil were reported infected by M. javanica or incognita previous surveys. From 2019–2021, we conducted our investigation 62 orchards from 10 counties Hainan, which are main producing areas China. collected roots visually scored gall index to evaluate di...
Ninety-six isolates of Meloidogyne species collected from banana fields from Martinique, Guadeloupe, and French Guiana, were examined using esterase (Est) and malate dehydrogenase (Mdh) phenotypes. Adult females identified as M. arenaria, M. incognita, M. javanica, M. cruciani, M. hispanica, and Meloidogyne sp. showed species-specific phenotypes only for the esterase enzymes. Intraspecific vari...
ABSTRACT Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) are sedentary, obligate endoparasites in plants, where they induce specialized feeding sites. The feeding sites act as strong metabolic sinks to which photosynthates are mobilized. The histopathological modifications in the nematode-induced feeding sites of artificially inoculated chickpea cv. UC 27 were qualitatively and quantitatively compared u...
Chitinolytic microflora may contribute to biological control of plant-parasitic nematodes by causing decreased egg viability through degradation of egg shells. Here, the influence of Lysobacter enzymogenes strain C3 on Caenorhabditis elegans, Heterodera schachtii, Meloidogyne javanica, Pratylenchus penetrans, and Aphelenchoides fragariae is described. Exposure of C. elegans to L. enzymogenes st...
Research was initiated to physically characterize the mitochondrial genomes of several Meloidogyne spp. and host-races, to address questions regarding their systematics and dispersal, and to assess the possibility of developing molecular diagnostics for these nematodes. Techniques were developed for purification and rapid detection of mitochondrial DNA from root-knot nematodes. Mitochondrial DN...
Three field trials were conducted to determine response of Meloidogyne javanica to tomato cultivars containing the Mi gene for resistance in sequential tests. Trials were conducted in spring and fall 1997 and spring 1998 on the same site. Tomatoes were grown on polyethylene mulch at a site initially treated with methyl bromide and then infested with M. javanica via drip tubing. Cultivars with t...
The reproduction of single egg-mass isolates of Meloidogyne javanica from Crete that differed in virulence were compared on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) genotypes homozygous or heterozygous for the Mi gene. The reproduction of three isolates with partial virulence was much greater on tomato genotypes heterozygous for the Mi gene (cultivars Scala, Bermuda, and 7353) than on two homozygous ge...
