Retaining the cubic structure, ThO, can accomodate large concentrations of lanthanides and the equivalent amount of oxygen vacancies. A facile, one-pot synthesis of rotaxanated supramolecular organic frameworks (RSOFs) is reported. These systems consist of bis-carboxylate anions threaded through the core of tetraimidazolium macrocycles. Trivalent metal cations, yttrium(III) and smaller lanthanides, are used to "lock" the threaded strut in place. This results in the formation of three-dimensional RSOFs.

Peptide sequences modified with lanthanide-chelating groups at their N-termini, or at their lysine side chains, were synthesized, and new Ln(III) complexes were characterized. We show that partial folding of the conjugates to form trimer coiled coil structures induces coordination of lanthanides to the ligand, which in turn further stabilizes the 3D structure.

A new chiral diketonate ligand based on carvone binds early lanthanides. The Eu complex displays high circularly polarized (g(lum) = 0.82) red luminescence under near-UV excitation in the solid state. This is the first report on such CPL activity in the solid state with a rigorous protocol to exclude artifacts. Paramagnetic NMR spectroscopy revealed the nature and structure of the active species.

A comparative study on the stabilizing ability between C5Me4(SiMe3) (Cp' for short) and amidinate in rare-earth metal complexes is investigated. Cp' is found to dissociate from half-sandwich bis(propiolamidinate) lanthanides via competition with a propiolamidinate, which clearly shows that the coordinative ability of chelate amidinate is stronger than that of η(5)-Cp' under the present conditions.
