Western North Pacific gray whales (WGWs), once considered extinct, are critically endangered with unknown migratory routes and reproductive areas. We attached satellite-monitored tags to seven WGWs on their primary feeding ground off Sakhalin Island, Russia, three of which subsequently migrated to regions occupied by non-endangered eastern gray whales (EGWs). A female with the longest-lasting t...

During micro-assembly processes, planar contacts often appear (between two manipulated components, one manipulated component and its gripping tool or substrate). Adhesion forces being predominant at the microscale, such contacts have important consequences on assembly strategies. One of these adhesion forces is the pull-off force which is the necessary force to break a contact. This article foc...

Localized direct electron heating by mode-converted ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) waves in D(H) tokamak plasmas has been clearly observed for the first time in Alcator C-Mod. Both onand off-axis (high field side) mode conversion electron heating (MCEH) have been observed. The MCEH profile was obtained from a break in slope analysis of electron temperature signals in the presence of ...

Heterostructures such as resonant tunneling diodes, quantum well photodetectors and lasers, and cascade lasers break the symmetry of the crystalline lattice. Such break in lattice symmetry causes a strong interaction of heavy-, lightand split-off hole bands. A resonant tunneling diode is used as a vehicle to study hole transport in heterostructures including the subband dispersion transverse to...

We report the first clear evidence for the simultaneous presence of a low frequency break and a QPO in the fluctuation power spectrum of a well known ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in M82 using long XMM-Newton observations. The break occurs at a frequency of 34.2 −3 mHz. The QPO has a centroid at νQPO = 114.3±1.5 mHz, a coherence Q ≡ νQPO/∆νFWHM ≃ 3.5 and an amplitude (rms) of 19% in the 2 − ...

During micro-assembly processes, surface forces influence the behavior of micro-objects more than volumic forces. Generally contacts happen between a microgripper and a micro-objet or a substrate and a micro-object. The pull-off force which represents the force required to break a contact is one of the predominant problem in micro-assembly. Now, current force measurements are mostly focused on ...

Diffuse electron-beam ionized discharges break down into arc discharges under three different conditions: static (no discharge orE-beam), dynamic (discharge on) and pulsed (inductive) overvoltage at switch-off. Dynamic breakdown voltages are lower than static breakdown voltages but in normal operation the discharge "on" voltage is kept to a minimum. The maximum load voltage will only be present...
