We present new relationships between halo masses (Mh) and several galaxy properties, including r-band luminosities (Lr), stellar (Mstar) and baryonic masses, stellar velocity dispersions (σ), and black hole masses (MBH). Approximate analytic expressions are given. In the galaxy halo mass range 3× 1010 M⊙ ≤ Mh ≤ 3× 1013 M⊙ the Mh–Lr, Mstar–Mh, and MBH–Mh are well represented by a double power la...
Recently a method has been developed for relating four dimensional Schwarzschild black holes in M-theory to near-extremal black holes in string theory with four charges, using suitably defined “boosts” and T-dualities. We show that this method can be extended to obtain the emission rate of low energy massless scalars for the four dimensional Schwarzschild hole from the microscopic picture of ra...
In this letter we extend the nonlinear σ model describing pure spin ladders with an arbitrary number of legs to the case of ladders containing a single static hole. A simple immediate application of this approach to classical ladders is worked out. PACS numbers: 75.50.Ee; 75.10.Jm; 75.10.Hk; 75.30.Ds
We demonstrate that the “sub-keplerian” rotation curve of maser spots in NGC 1068 can be explained by the gravitational attraction of the disc orbiting the central black hole. Possible parameters matching observations are: black hole mass ≃ (1.2± 0.1) × 10 M⊙, disc outer edge & 1.3 pc, aspect ratio 3× 10 −3 . H R . 0.3, surface density Σ ∝ R , and disc mass ≃ (9.4±1.6)×10 M⊙. The physical condi...
The black hole mass of BL Lac objects from the stellar velocity dispersion of the host galaxy ABSTRACT The correlation between black hole mass M BH and stellar velocity dispersion σ in nearby elliptical galaxies affords a novel way to determine M BH in active galaxies. We report on measurements of σ from optical spectra of 7 BL Lac host galaxies. The derived values of σ are in the range of 160 ...
We investigate the conformal string σ-model corresponding to a general fivedimensional non-extremal black hole solution. In the horizon region the theory reduces to an exactly solvable conformal field theory. We determine the modular invariant spectrum of physical string states, which expresses the Rindler momentum operator in terms of three charges and string oscillators. For black holes with ...
We study how the quasiparticle picture of the quark can be modified near but above the critical tempearture (Tc) of the chiral phase transition; we incorporate into the quark self-energy the effects of the precursory soft modes of the phase transition, i.e., ‘para-σ(π) meson’. It is found that the quark spectrum has a three-peak structure near Tc: We show that the additional new spectra origina...
Recent millimeter-VLBI observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) have, for the first time, directly probed distances comparable to the horizon scale of a black hole. This provides unprecedented access to the environment immediately around the horizon of an accreting black hole. We leverage both existing spectral and polarization measurements and our present understanding of accretion theory to pr...
We examine whether active galaxies obey the same relation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion as inactive systems, using the largest published sample of velocity dispersions for active nuclei to date. The combination of 56 original measurements with objects from the literature not only increases the sample from the 15 considered previously to 88 objects, but allows us to cov...
We report five new measurements of central black hole masses based on STIS and WFPC2 observations with the Hubble Space Telescope and on axisymmetric, three-integral, Schwarzschild orbit-library kinematic models. We selected a sample of galaxies within a narrow range in velocity dispersion that cover a range of galaxy parameters (including Hubble type and core/power-law surface density profile)...
