CS2 hydrolase, a zinc-dependent enzyme that converts carbon disulfide to carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, exists as a mixture of octameric ring and hexadecameric catenane forms in solution. A combination of size exclusion chromatography, multi-angle laser light scattering, and mass spectrometric analyses revealed that the unusual catenane structure is not an artefact, but a naturally occurr...

High-speed, gross, alpha autoradiographs can be made if silver-activated zinc sulfide is used as an intensifier in conjunction with high-speed film. The intensifier is interposed between the sample and film. This technique requires about 1/1000 of the exposure time required with Kodak NTB plates. The gross autoradiographs have greater contrast but slightly less resolution than conventional plates.

An oxidative stripping treatment triggers the transition from n- to p-type photoelectrochemical behavior of zinc copper indium sulfide quantum dot electrodes. These electrodes in contact with a polysulfide solution change from photoanodic to photocathodic behavior in a certain potential range upon electrochemical treatment.

The novel genes soxFGH were identified, completing the sox gene cluster of Paracoccus pantotrophus coding for enzymes involved in lithotrophic sulfur oxidation. The periplasmic SoxF, SoxG, and SoxH proteins were induced by thiosulfate and purified to homogeneity from the soluble fraction. soxF coded for a protein of 420 amino acids with a signal peptide containing a twin-arginine motif. SoxF wa...

Porous copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS) thin film was prepared via a solvothermal approach. Compared with conventional dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), double junction photoelectrochemical cells using dye-sensitized n-type TiO(2) (DS-TiO(2)) as the photoanode and porous p-type CZTS film as the photocathode shows an increased short circuit current, external quantum efficiency and power conversi...

Seasonal and spatial variations in metal concentrations and pH were found in a stream at a restored copper mine site located near a massive sulfide deposit in the Foothill copper-zinc belt of the Sierra Nevada, California. At the mouth of the stream, copper concentrations increased and pH decreased with increased streamflow after the onset of winter rain and, unexpectedly, reached extreme value...

The aim of the present study was to investigate the interaction of zinc chloride (3 mg/kg, intraperitoneally [ip]) in rat liver in terms of the biosynthesis of nanoparticles. Zinc treatment increased zinc content in rat liver. Analysis of fluorescence revealed the presence of red fluorescence in the liver following zinc treatment. Interestingly, the co-exposure to zinc (3 mg/kg, ip) and seleniu...

Luminescent quantum dots conjugated with highly selective molecular recognition ligands are widely used for targeting and imaging biological structures. In this paper, water soluble cholinomimetic cadmium selenide (core), zinc selenide/zinc sulfide (shell) quantum dots were synthesized for targeting cholinergic sites. Cholinomimetic specificity was incorporated by conjugation of the quantum dot...

A new method for the capping of colloidal CdS nanocrystals with ZnS shells is presented. A combination of the monomolecular precursor zinc ethylxanthate (Zn(ex)2) and zinc stearate was used to replace hazardous organometallic reagents usually applied in this procedure, i.e. bis(trimethylsilyl) sulfide and diethylzinc. Its simple preparation, air-stability and low decomposition temperature of 15...
