BACKGROUND In high-income countries, 6% of all women will have sustained a fracture of the wrist (distal radius) by the age of 80 years and 9% by the age of 90 years. Advances in orthopaedic surgery have improved the outcome for patients: many such fractures can be treated in a plaster cast alone, but others require surgical fixation to hold the bone in place while they heal. The existing evide...
The authors report on a retrospective study of 205 consecutive patients at the Maxillofacial Unit of The Royal Melbourne Hospital to assess if adherence to Champy's principles in placement of miniplates in mandibular fractures minimises morbidity. 205 well documented cases of mandibular fractures treated with internal fixation, January 1985 to April 1990 were studied. The patients were assigned...
Maintaining reduction of an acetabular fracture during internal fixation is difficult. A variety of clamps can be used to facilitate reduction, but they are cumbersome and may damage the sciatic nerve. We developed a simple and cost-effective technique for provisional reduction and fixation of acetabular fractures using 2 screws and a tension band wire.
Volar locking-plate and kirschner-wire fixation did not differ in terms of functional outcomes after dorsally displaced distal radial fracture.
Closed treatment has provided good results in uncomplicated cases of mallet finger; however, surgical fixation is recommended when there is involvement of more than one third of the base of the distal phalanx. Various techniques have been described for this purpose. The goal of this report is to present a simple method of K-wire fixation and show our results with this procedure.
OBJECTIVE To investigate the use of a tension wire band secured to monocortical screws for open reduction and internal fixation of simple, displaced, and/or unstable mandibular fractures. DESIGN Retrospective review with follow-up duration of at least 6 weeks. SETTING Level I university trauma center. PATIENTS Twenty-nine patients (27 males and 2 females), aged 7 to 46 years. Ten patients...
PURPOSE To evaluate the ratio of soft tissue to hard tissue in bilateral sagittal split setback osteotomy with rigid internal fixation or wire fixation. MATERIALS AND METHODS A literature search was performed using PubMed, Medline, CINAHL, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar Beta. From the original 766 articles identified, 8 articles were included. Two articles were prosp...
In the present case report, the comprehensive management of a bilateral mandibular fracture in a single-humped camel including pre-, peri- and post-operative cares is described. A one-year-old camel with the overhanging of the rostral part of the lower jaw which occurred seven days ago was presented. After clinical and radiographic examinations, a bilateral mandibular fracture at the caudal par...
Introduction Fixation of the acromioclavicular joint with Kirschner wires (K-wire) has been widely used by orthopeadic and trauma surgeons in recent past. Now technique is less common. Migration a common complication being limited to fixation area majority cases can be devastating event rare cases. The objective was explore K-wire migration into spinal canal after repair. Material methods A cli...
ABSTRACT This is a report of a study on the long term results of PHILOS plating and percutaneous K-wire fixation in a prospective series of proximal humerus fractures in elderly patients. We reviewed a total of 60 patients with proximal humerus fractures in 30 patients (Group 1), who were treated by open reduction and internal fixation with Proximal Humeral Internal Locking System (PHILOS) plat...
