A formalism is developed for determining the possibility of operation of a gyrotron at both the fundamental, w = wc, in a TE mode and at the second harmonic, w' = 2wc, in a TE , mode. This formalism is then applied to two physical problems. First, the conditions are derived for conversion of a gyrotron from operation at w = w to operation at w' 2w . Such a conversion c c is shown to be most pra...
We report measurements of cavity-QED effects for the radiative coupling of atoms in a dilute vapor to the external evanescent field of a whispering-gallery mode ~WGM! in a fused silica microsphere. The high Q (5310), small mode volume ~10 28 cm ), and unusual symmetry of the microcavity evanescent field enable velocity-selective interactions between fields with photon number of order unity in t...
Whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) have been a source of fascination to physicists since at least the work of Lord Rayleigh in 1910 [1], when he explained the phenomenon that a whisper in one end of the gallery of St. Paul’s Cathedral could be heard at the other end. This phenomenon has practical implications as well, since WGMs in resonators with cylindrical or spherical symmetry can have very hi...
We demonstrate theoretically that plane wave propagating in free space can be used to excite the whispering gallery mode in dielectric microresonators grown on the top of nanoplasmonic structures, with the assistance of surface plasmon wave. We have demonstrated the coupling modes using both localized and propagating surface plasmon-supporting nanostructure surfaces.
We demonstrate a method for generation of beams of light with large angular momenta. The method utilizes whispering gallery mode resonators that transform a plane electromagnetic wave into high order Bessel beams. Interference pattern among the beams as well as shadow pictures induced by the beams are observed and studied.
A blue (ca. 440 nm) liquid laser with an ultra-low threshold through which quasi-continuous wave pumping is accessible is achieved by engineering unconventional ternary CdZnS/ZnS alloyed-core/shell QDs. Such an achievement is enabled by exploiting the novel gain media with minimal defects, suppressed Auger recombination, and large gain cross-section in combination with high-quality-factor whisp...
We report on-chip InGaAs nanopillar lasers directly grown on silicon using a lowtemperature, CMOS-compatible MOCVD process. A novel whispering gallery and Fabry-Perot hybrid cavity mode provides optical feedback for laser oscillation in as-grown subwavelength nanopillars. ©2010 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (140.5960) Semiconductor lasers; (230.3120) Integrated optics devices; (130.313...
The mode spectrum of a 3.8-cm-diameter fused-silica sphere has been studied in the vicinity of 1.06 microm. A single-frequency Nd:YAG laser was used to excite whispering gallery modes by means of evanescent wave coupling. The spectrum is in excellent agreement with predictions from Mie theory.
We analyze the single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide coupled to a whispering-gallery-type resonator interacting with a two-level atom. The single-photon transport properties such as the transmission and reflection amplitudes, as well as the resonator and the atom responses, are solved exactly via a real-space approach. The treatment includes the intermode backscattering between the...
Whispering gallery mode resonators are small, radially symmetric dielectrics that trap light through continuous total internal reflection. The resonant condition at which light is efficiently confined within the structure is linked with refractive index, which has led to the development of sensitive label-free sensing schemes based on whispering gallery mode resonators. One resonator design use...
