Occurrence of tetracycline resistance genes encoding ribosomal protection proteins was examined in 151 tetracycline-resistant bacterial isolates from fish and seawater at coastal aquaculture sites in Japan and Korea. The tet(M) gene was detected in 34 Japanese and Korean isolates, which included Vibrio sp., Lactococcus garvieae, Photobacterium damsela subsp. piscicida, and unidentified Gram-pos...

We report the complete sequence of two novel plasmids, pSDH-1 and pSDH-2, isolated from clinical Vibrio cholerae non-O1/non-O139 during the early phase of the 2010 Haitian cholera epidemic. Plasmids were revealed by employing single-cell genomics and their genome content suggests self-mobilization and, for pSDH-2, a toxin-antitoxin (TA) system for plasmid stabilization was identified. The putat...

AIMS To describe the diversity of the culturable mesophilic and potentially pathogenic vibrios isolated at 22 and 37°C on TCBS medium, in September 2009 from seawater and surface sediments. METHODS AND RESULTS q-PCR assays previously selected for the identification of bacterial strains isolated at 37°C were used in combination with the partial sequencing of two housekeeping genes, pyrH and to...

We describe the draft genome sequence of the clinical Vibrio vulnificus strain 03_7315, isolated in 2016 from the blood of a diabetic patient who died of septicemia after ingestion of seafood. The draft genome, with 4,755,588 bp covering two chromosomes, presented 4,434 genes, 4,213 coding sequences, and 117 pseudogenes.

INTRODUCTION Vibrio metschnikovii is a very rare species and can be fatal to patients with massive comorbidity. Until now only eight other cases have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION This case report describes a 78-year-old Danish man who presented with fever, hypotension and unconsciousness and he developed cardiac arrest. Vibrio metschnikovii was identified in all his blood samples and effe...

Strain P-2P44T was isolated from creosote-contaminated marine sediments by using a most-probable number procedure in which phenanthrene was the sole carbon and energy source. Growth experiments showed that P-2P44T utilized several two- and three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as substrates, including naphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene and phenanthrene. Additionally, gas-chromatograp...

Like many other gram-negative bacteria, the human pathogen Vibrio vulnificus is induced into a viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state by incubation at low temperatures. The ability of any bacterium to resuscitate from this dormant state would appear to be essential if the VBNC state is truly a survival strategy. The question as to whether the culturable cells which appear following removal of th...

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is the leading cause of food-borne diseases, and several pathogenic strains cause global gastroenteritis outbreaks. Here, we report a draft genome sequence of V. parahaemolyticus SNUVpS-1, which was isolated from seafood in a fishery market in the Republic of Korea and contained TL, toxR, and toxRS(old) genes. The current draft genome sequence will contribute to the effo...

Reports from state health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that the annual number of reported human vibriosis cases in New England has increased in the past decade. Concurrently, there has been a shift in both the spatial distribution and seasonal detection of Vibrio spp. throughout the region based on limited monitoring data. To determine environmental fa...

Two Gram negative, facultatively anaerobic, halophilic, motile, slightly curved rod-shaped bacterial strains MSSRF60(T) and MSSRF64 were isolated from the roots of a mangrove-associated wild rice collected in the Pichavaram mangroves, India. These strains possess the key functional nitrogenase gene nifH. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA, recA, gapA, mreB, gyrB and pyrH, gene sequence...
