The inner border of the eyelid margin is critically important for ocular surface integrity because it guarantees the thin spread of the tear film. Its exact morphology in the human is still insufficiently known. The histology in serial sections of upper and lower lid margins in whole-mount specimens from 10 human body donors was compared to in vivo confocal microscopy of eight eyes with a Heide...

The effects on the inner surface temperatures of the upper and lower eyelids of four commercial heat therapies were compared for an individual with recalcitrant meibomian gland dysfunction. Three therapies (Bruder mask, Blephasteam, and MiBoFlo) involved the application of heat to the external lid surface, and the fourth (LipiFlow) applied heat to the internal lid surface. Only LipiFlow was eff...

AIM The aim of this study was to assess the repeatability and reproducibility by physicians of upper lid measurements and to investigate the influence of clinical experience on the learning curve effect. METHODS Both eyes of 22 outpatients were assessed for three basic measures of ptosis: marginal reflex distance (MRD) for upper and lower lids, upper lid skin crease (SC), and levator function...

The facial action coding system (FACS) was used to examine recognition rates in 105 healthy young men and women who viewed 128 facial expressions of posed and evoked happy, sad, angry and fearful emotions in color photographs balanced for gender and ethnicity of poser. A series of 112 eyelids with symptomatic aberrant eyelashes were treated by cryotherapy using a specially designed large-surfaced high-flow nitrous oxide probe. Either thermocouple control to -20 degrees C or timing of the application to 20 seconds (lower lid) or 25 seconds (upper lid) was used to monitor the freeze. Both techniques obtained a high cure rate and a low incidence of complications.

A proper vertex coloring of a graph is said to be locally identifying if the sets of colors in the closed neighborhood of any two adjacent non-twin vertices are distinct. The lid-chromatic number of a graph is the minimum number of colors used by a locally identifying vertex-coloring. In this paper, we prove that for any graph class of bounded expansion, the lid-chromatic number is bounded. Cla...

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by Leishmania species and is classified into three forms; cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral. The eyelid is a rare site involved by leishmaniasis and only makes up 2.5% of cases with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Although CL can affect both upper and lower lids on either their outer or inner aspects, the lateral canthus is most often affected. The...

Enteopium of the upper lids is very frequently met with amongst our dispensary patients, and in several instances I have found both the upper and lower lids affected. The native Jarrahs have apparently only one mode of operating in such cases, which consists in removing a large piece of integument, extending from the eyebrow down some distance ou the upper lid, the extensive wound thus made is ...

This article describes the surgical anatomy of the midcheek. The article's key points: (1) Structurally, the midcheek is formed by the convergence of three components: the lid-cheek segment, the malar segment, and the nasolabial segment. (2) The midcheek skeleton provides the attachment for the muscles and ligaments of both the lower lid and the upper lip. (3) The midcheek contains proportional...
