Collagens can be divided into two groups, i.e., fibrillar and non-fibrillar collagens. Short-chain collagens, a subgroup of non-fibrillar collagens, comprises collagen type VIII and type X. These two collagen types show several similarities in structure and possibly also in function. Type VIII collagen appears to be secreted by rapidly proliferating cells. It can be found in basement membranes ...

Laminin-332 (formerly laminin-5) and collagen VII are basement membrane proteins expressed at the invasive front of human squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) tumors. These proteins have protumorigenic properties, but whether laminin-332 and collagen VII promote SCC tumors by providing adhesion or other nonadhesive extracellular cues, or whether laminin-332 and collagen VII interact together in this p...

Linkage of the anonymous marker D3S2 at 3p21 has been shown in three British families with dominant dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa with a combined lod score of 6.75 at theta = 0. This locus is close to the collagen type VII locus implying that abnormalities of this gene cause dominant dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa.

Bullous systemic lupus erythematosus is a rare blistering condition with a distinctive combination of clinical, histological and immunopathologic features that together constitute a unique bullous disease phenotype. It is often associated with autoimmunity to type VII collagen. Here we report a child who presented with bullous systemic lupus erythematosus. Rapid resolution of the blisters occur...

Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB) is due to mutations in the type VII collagen (C7) gene. Potential therapies for DEB include (i) ex vivo gene therapy and (ii) intradermal injection of gene-corrected DEB fibroblasts, lentiviral vectors expressing C7 or recombinant C7 itself. With regard to molecular engineering, the dermal fibroblast has advantages over epidermal keratinocytes for deliveri...

Collagen molecules are structural macro-molecules of the extracellular matrix that include in their structure one or several domains that have a characteristic triple helical conformation. They have been classified by types that define distinct sets of polypeptide chains that can form homo- and heterotrimeric assemblies. All the collagen molecules participate in supramolecular aggregates that a...
