Ringing the changes: The total synthesis of the title compound centers around a novel strategy that employs a nickel(0)-phosphine complex and triethyl borane in an efficient closure of a 14-membered ring through C--C bond formation (see scheme; cod=cyclooctadiene). The synthesis was accomplished in 10 steps and in approximately 9 % overall yield.

In the title compound, [Ni(NO(3))(2)(C(6)H(15)OP)(2)], the Ni(II) ion, lying on a crystallographic twofold axis, adopts a distorted octa-hedral coordination, consisting of O-donor atoms of two symmetry-related triethyl-phospine oxide and two bidentate nitrate ligands.

Benzylcyanide and 4-nitrobenzylcyanide condensed with triethyl orthoformate and piperidine or morpholine to yield 2-aryl-2-piperidinyl or 2-morpholinylacrylonitriles. These coupled with aromatic diazonium salts to yield the 2-arylhydrazno-2-arylethane nitriles in good yields. The latter were converted into 4-aminopyrazoles in good yields using the Thorpe-Ziegler cyclization.

The title compound, C(11)H(14)Cl(2)O, was synthesized by the reaction of a dichloro-methane solution of (R)-carvone and potassium tert-butano-late in the presence of a catalytic amount of benzyl-triethyl-ammonium chloride in chloro-form.
