It is suggested by Yagerr5] that default knowledge can be represented in the framework of possibility theory. In this note, we show a potential application of the proposal. That is, the priorities of defaults can be encoded into the formalism naturally and the results produced by such encoded default theories reeect the strength of the conclusions.

Possibilistic networks are important tools for modelling and reasoning, especially in the presence of imprecise and/or uncertain information. These graphical models have been successfully used in several real applications. Since their construction by experts is complex and time consuming, several researchers have tried to learn them from data. In this paper, we try to present and discuss releva...

Information is often modelled as a set of relevant possibilities, treated as logically possible worlds. However, this has the unintuitive consequence that the logical consequences of an agent’s information cannot be informative for that agent. There are many scenarios in which such consequences are clearly informative for the agent in question. Attempts to weaken the logic underlying each possi...

Modified Hb solutions have been developed as O(2) carrier transfusion fluids, but of concern is the possibility that increased scavenging of nitric oxide (NO) within the plasma will alter vascular reactivity even if the Hb does not readily extravasate. The effect of decreasing hematocrit from approximately 30% to 18% by an exchange transfusion of a 6% sebacyl cross-linked tetrameric Hb solution...

Haematomas in various body organs have been reported following snake bites. We report the case of a post-menopausal woman who presented with a broad ligament haematoma diagnosed two days after a viper bite which required blood transfusion and laparotomy. This rare possibility should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a woman presenting with a lower abdominal or pelvic mass, anaemia ...

Qualitative possibilistic networks, also known as min-based possibilistic networks, are important tools for handling uncertain information in the possibility theory framework. Despite their importance, only the junction tree adaptation has been proposed for exact reasoning with such networks. This paper explores alternative algorithms using compilation techniques. We first propose possibilistic...

There has been an ever-increasing interest in multi-disciplinary research on representing and reasoning with imperfect data. Possibilistic networks present one of the powerful frameworks of interest for representing uncertain and imprecise information. This paper covers the problem of their parameters learning from imprecise datasets, i.e., containing multi-valued data. We propose in the first ...

Current evidence indicates that variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is caused by the transmission of bovine spongiform encephalopathy to humans. The clinical and investigative features of variant CJD are relatively distinct from sporadic CJD and the neuropathological appearances are novel. The number of cases of vCJD in the UK may have peaked, but the total future number of cases of vCJD is uncer...

Dempster Shafer theory of evidence (DS theory) and possibility theory are two main formalisms in modelling and reasoning with uncertain information. These two theories are inter-related as already observed and discussed in many papers (e.g. [DP82,DP88b]). One aspect that is common to the two theories is how to quantitatively measure the degree of conflict (or inconsistency) between pieces of un...

Uncertainty importance measures typically reflect the degree to which uncertainty about risk and reliability parameters at the component level influences uncertainty about parameters at the system level. The definition of these measures is typically founded on a Bayesian perspective where subjective probabilities are used to express epistemic uncertainty; hence, they do not reflect the effect o...
