Subliminal words cause behavioral priming, yet the depth of their processing remains debated. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), Nakamura et al. demonstrate in this issue of Neuron that this subliminal priming effect can be selectively disrupted. Distinct TMS sites disrupt priming in lexical decision and pronunciation tasks, suggesting that task set influences subliminal processing.

Background and Motivations: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been used as a non-invasive tool in various neuroscience applications including investigating brain functions, serving as a clinical diagnostic tool and as a therapy for several neuropsychiatric disorders [1]. TMS delivers time-pulse magnetic fields created by special coils to induce local currents in the tissue i.e., neuro...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation TMS is the first new physical technique used since 1993 in investigations on their antidepressant efficacy. Literature investigations show, that the majority of clinical investigations were carried out in the control to placebo and were double-blinded. The lack of a possibility of obtaining the true placebo conditions causes, that the terms of double blinding, ...

We used single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to study visuospatial attention. TMS was applied over one hemisphere, or simultaneously over both the right and left posterior parietal cortex (PPC), at two different interstimulus intervals (ISI) during a visual detection task. Unilateral TMS over the right and left PPC, respectively, impaired detection of contralateral presented vis...

In recent rehabilitation, treatments include electrical stimulation and magnetic stimulation. They are transcranial (TMS), repetitive peripheral (rPMS), transcutaneous nerve (TENS), others. rPMS has been effective technique for non-invasive neuromodulation. Clinical effects of have reported such as generalized sarcopenia dysphagia, measurement rectus femoris muscle (RF), strength suprahyoid mus...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has recently been investigated as a possible adjuvant treatment for many neuropsychiatric disorders, and has already been approved for the treatment of drug-resistant depression in the United States and in Brazil, among other countries. Although its use in other neuropsychiatric disorders is still largely experimental, many physicians have been using it a...

This manuscript reviews the current stance and the pertinent problems of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as brain mapping methodologies. The missing structure-function relation limits the use of TMS, whereas the uncertainty about the functional significance of activated cortical regions might render interpretation of fMRI studies difficul...

This article provides a brief overview of current trends in combining neuroimaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). First, I outline the utility of magnetic-resonance imaging (MRI) and frameless stereotaxy for planning, monitoring and documenting the location of the TMS coil relative to the subject's brain. Second, I describe two novel methods, based on the combination of TMS with p...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been widely used in studies of human motor and cognitive functions as well as in clinical treatment. Biophysical mechanism underlying its e!ect is, however, largely unknown. Here, we develop a theory to calculate the e!ect of magnetic stimulation on arbitrary neuronal structure. Then, we employ a computer simulation which combines a realistic multicom...

Abstract A subthreshold pulse of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on the motor cortex can modulate amplitude monosynaptic reflex (H-reflex) elicited in flexor carpi radialis (FCR) muscle, a method known as TMS-conditioning H-reflex. The purpose this study was to establish intersession reliability over course three sessions. Eleven healthy participants received either peripheral nerve (PN...
