Microglia activation results in release of proinflammatory molecules including cytokines, which contribute to neuronal damage in the central nervous system (CNS) if not controlled. Tetracycline antibiotics such as minocycline inhibit microglial activation and cytokine expression during CNS inflammation. In the present study we found that administration of chemically modified tetracycline-3 (COL...

Cancer gene therapy with adenovirus vectors (Adv) is limited to local administration because systemic administration of Adv produces a weak therapeutic effect and severe side effects. Previously, we generated a dual cancer-specific Adv system by using Adv covalently conjugated to polyethylene glycol (PEG) for transductional targeting and the telomere reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter as a c...

In an effort to find a new oral cephalosporin with well-balanced antibacterial spectrum, good oral absorbability and long plasma half-life, a series of oxyimino aminothiazolyl 3-[(E)- or (Z)-N-substituted carbamoyloxy]propenyl cephems was synthesized and evaluated for antibacterial activity and oral absorbability. The substituents of the carbamoyloxy group affected their in vitro activity and b...

The aim of this study was to explore the plasmid characteristics of eight clinical Enterobacteriaceae strains containing extended broad spectrum beta-lactamases and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance. Plasmids were transferred by conjugation or transformation and resistance determinants were investigated by PCR. We showed that at least one plasmid harbouring qnrB or qnrS determinant was tran...

Description of a rare recurrent Gartner’s duct cyst associated with yeast infection in a crossbred heifer isreported. The recurrence was caused by uncontrolled yeast infection that showed in vitro sensitivity tooxytetracycline. Administration of local clotrimazole and systemic oxytetracycline as per recommendedtherapeutic dose regime resulted in complete recovery.

Cyclic peptides with an even number of alternating d,l-alpha-amino acid residues are known to self-assemble into organic nanotubes. Such peptides previously have been shown to be stable upon protease treatment, membrane active, and bactericidal and to exert antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and other gram-positive bacteria. The present report describes the in vitro and in viv...

Background: Drugs applied topically to the eye may be absorbed systemically to a substantial degree, with the potential to cause serious systemic side-effects. Children may be particularly vulnerable to systemic effects of topically applied agents as topical doses are often not weight-adjusted. Case presentation: This article describes a case of serious systemic side-effect by the use of topic...
