In this paper we present a general solution to the problem of 3D reconstruction from the analysis of luminance edges, which takes into account possible viewer-dependent characteristics of such contours. The method first proceeds by matching contours in a loose fashion, so that both sharp edges and horizons are included. Classical stereometric methods allow us to detect sharp edges and rule out ...
We present a method to solve shape-from-shadow using shadow graphs which give a new graph-based representation for shadow constraints. It can be shown that the shadow graph alone is enough to solve the shape-from-shadow problem from a dense set of images. Shadow graphs provide a simpler and more systematic approach to represent and integrate shadow constraints from multiple images. To recover s...
When reconstructing a surface from irregularly spaced data, sampled from a closed surface in 3D, we need to decide how to identify a good triangulation. As a measure of quality we consider various differential geometrical properties, such as integral Gaussian curvature, integral mean curvature and area. We furthermore study a non-functional approach, which is based on a mapping procedure. A loc...
A surface reconstruction technique based on the Lminimization of the variation of the gradient is introduced. This leads to a non-smooth convex programming problem. Well-posedness and convergence of the method is established and an interior point based algorithm is introduced. The L-surface reconstruction algorithm is illustrated on various test cases including natural and urban terrain data.
In this paper we propose a novel 3D face recognition system. Furthermore we propose and discuss the development of a 3D reconstruction system designed specifically for the purpose of face recognition. The reconstruction subsystem utilises a capture rig comprising of six cameras to obtain two independent stereo pairs of the subject face during a structured light projection with the remaining two...
This paper is concerned with the problem of surface reconstruction from stereo images for large scenes having large depth ranges. The passive stereo paradigm is inadequate for this problem because of the need to aim cameras in different directions and to fixate a t different objects. We present an active stereo approach in which the scene is systematically scanned and image acquisition and surf...
A common problem in fitting, or reconstructing, 3D surfaces is the need to register multiple sets of measurements into a common coordinate system. This occurs, for example, if multiple range images are taken to cover the entire surface of an object and the range imager’s viewpoints are not precisely known. Much previous work on registration depends on the identification of corresponding point l...
Outlined is a new approach to the problem of surfacing particle-based fluid simulations. The key idea is to construct a surface that is as smooth as possible while remaining faithful to the particle locations. We describe a mesh-based algorithm that expresses the surface in terms of a constrained optimization problem. Our algorithm incorporates a secondary contribution in Marching Tiles, a gene...
A technique is given for the recovery of planar surfaces using two beam-spread sonar readings. If a single, planar surface gave rise to the two readings, then the method recovers the surface quite accurately. Simulation and experiment demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique and recommend its use in practice. IThis work was supported in part by the Advanced Research Projects agency under ...
