The term subluxation has been used in this title because it denotes forward displacement of the last lumbar vertebra on the sacrum without a defect of the interarticular part of the neural arch. Some authorities accept the term spondylolisthesis only when a neural arch defect is present, and describe those cases without such a lesion as subluxation despite the marked attenuation of the neural a...
Atlantoaxial subluxation is a well-known but poorly recognized disease in rheumatoid patients. We report a patient with rheumatoid arthritis whose chief complaint was dyspnea on arrival to the emergency department (ED). After further investigation, spinal cord compression caused by atlantoaxial subluxation was diagnosed. This is an uncommon but important case that ED physicians should be aware of.
Over-zealous release of the first dorsal compartment of the wrist for de Quervain's disease or other lesions such as ganglia, may result in volar subluxation of the tendons of abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis. This is usually asymptomatic, but may occasionally become disabling. We describe an operation using part of the extensor retinaculum to stabilise such a subluxation.
Background: Atlantoaxial subluxation occurs when there is misalignment of the atlantoaxial joint. Several etiologies confer increased risk in children, including neck trauma, inflammation, infection, or inherent ligamentous laxity cervical spine.
Methods: A case study was performed. Demographics and clinical data were reviewed for etiology, imaging techniques, treatment, clinic outcomes.&...
We attempted to determine whether shoulder subluxation at the early stage of stroke can predict motor outcome in relation to the corticospinal tract (CST) state on diffusion tensor tractography.Fifty-nine stroke patients with severe hemiparesis were recruited. The patients were classified according to the distance of shoulder subluxation (group A: ≥2 cm, group B: <2 cm) and the affected CST on ...
Based on biomechanics several operational principles for the neutralization of a shoulder subluxation are described. The pros and cons of the operational principles are discussed. A detailed analysis of the forces acting on the upper and lower arm indicates a preference for only one of the operational principles and explains why the arm sling and hemisling fail in the elimination of subluxation...
Traumatic atlanto-axial subluxation is a rare injury which may not be revealed on routine radiographs, especially when there is muscle spasm. We report on seven patients with atlanto-axial subluxation as a result of neck injury; only two of them had significant head injuries. Three patients presented with a neurological deficit attributable to the injury, one immediate and two with delayed onse...
