OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment of infected nonunion of tibia and femur by bone transport. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 110 patients with infected nonunion of tibia and femur treated by bone transport. Our study included 92 males and 18 females with a mean age of 38.90 years. The site of infected nonunion involved 72...

INTRODUCTION We report a patient who developed nonunion of both bones of the forearm associated with hyperparathyroidism (HPT). PRESENTATION OF CASE The patient was a 71-year-old female who previously fell and hit her left hand on the ground. At 2 years after injury the patient visited our hospital, since she became aware of instability of the left forearm without an inducer due to nonunion o...

Few reports in the literature have documented the isolation of Ureaplasma species from sternal wounds. A case of sternal wound infection likely due to Ureaplasma parvum is described. When routine bacterial cultures from a sternal wound infection fail to yield a pathogen, diagnostic testing for mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas should be considered.

Sternal instability with mediastinitis is a very serious complication after median sternotomy. Sternal dehiscence repair together with debridement of the infected tissue is the mainstay of therapy where various modalities are employed. Here, we report the use of titanium plate for sternum stabilization in a patient with sternal dehiscence and superficial wound infection.

Sternal osteitis, a potential consequence of cardiac surgery, remains rare. The bacteria involved belong mostly to the genus Staphylococcus. Sternal infections caused by Serratia marcescens are exceptional. We report an unusual recurrence of sternal infection with S. marcescens, 15 years after the initial episode. The identities of the isolates were determined by genomic analysis.

Method Methods and outcomes of sternal closure were reviewed in consecutive patients undergoing a variety of cardiothoracic surgical procedures. Sternal closure in the historical control group was performed using trans-sternal, stainlesssteel wire sutures; subsequent patients were closed using wire sutures together with a novel, peristernal cable-tie closure system to reinforce the corpus stern...

BACKGROUND The healing process of bone fracture requires a well-controlled multistage and sequential order beginning immediately after the injury. However, complications leading to nonunion exist, creating serious problems and costs for patients. Transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) and bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP-2) are two major growth factors involved in human bone fracture healing...

BACKGROUND Surgical revision concepts for the treatment of aseptic humeral, femoral, and tibial diaphyseal nonunion were evaluated. It was analyzed if the range of time to bone healing was shorter, and if clinical and radiological long-term outcome was better following application of additional recombinant human Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7 (rhBMP-7) compared to no additional rhBMP-7 use. MET...
