The evolutions of practices of seismic slope stability analysis of earth embankment/dam are discussed in this paper. The basic concepts of various methods, salient features, advantages and limitations of each of them are elucidate. Methods for both stability analysis and deformation calculation are presented. Methods for calculation of deformation of post liquefaction stage are also briefed.

Interaction of concrete with the persistent prevailing environmental condition will alter its material properties and cause deterioration. There are various causes distress in structure, such as improper construction practices, post-construction expansion due to Alkali-Aggregate Reaction (AAR), corrosion reinforcement, non-homogeneity concrete, development cracks shrinkage thermal stresses, agi...

An experimental study was conducted on a large size stepped spillway model with a moderate slope (26.6o) for a range of discharges between 0.020 and 0.237 m/s. In some experiments, the stepped chute was equipped with uniform steps of 5 and 10 cm heights respectively. In addition several non-uniform configurations with combinations of 5 and 10 cm high steps were investigated. For each configurat...

A chute is characterized by a steep bed slope associated with torrential flow. This chute flow may be either smooth or stepped. The flow conditions in stepped channels are classified as nappe flow, transition flow and skimming flow. In this paper, hydraulic characteristics of flow regimes on the stepped channels are presented systematically under a wide range of discharge, channel slope and ste...

Governments, multinational companies, and researchers today collect unprecedented amounts of data on human feelings. These provide information citizens’ happiness, levels customer satisfaction, employees’ mental stress, societal trust, other important variables. Yet a key scientific difficulty tends to be downplayed, or even ignored, by many users such information. Human feelings are not measur...

Habitat fragmentation is the primary cause of the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services, but its underlying processes and mechanisms remain poorly understood. Studies of islands and insular terrestrial habitats are essential for improving our understanding of habitat fragmentation. We argue that the Three-Gorges Dam, the largest that humans have ever created, presents a unique grand-scale...
