Two hundred Arian broiler chicks were used to investigate the effect of contents of dietary glucosinolates on performance of broiler chicks during starter (0-21 days of age) and grower periods (22-42 days of age) in a completely randomized design. The dietary glucosinolates contents in the starter period were 0 (S1), 7.5 (S2), 15 (S3), 22.5 (S4), 30 (S5) µmol/g and in the grower period they wer...

Dairy siphovirus φLmd1, which infects starter culture isolate Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. dextranicum A1, showed resistance to pasteurization and was able to grow on 3 of the 4 commercial starter cultures tested. Its 26,201-bp genome was similar to that of Leuconostoc phage of vegetable origin but not to those of dairy phages infecting Lactococcus.

o A food-grade cloning system for application in food safety and food quality arena. o A system where genes for key metabolic and industrial traits can be under-/over-expressed. o Characterisation of the phage resistance determinants for food-grade improvement of starter cultures. o Identification of the PyrR gene as a target for the development of bacteriophage resistance strategies in starter...

Determination of the starter torque-speed diagram is a major task in the design or selection of a proper gas turbine starter. In this paper, the maximum power of the MGT-40 gas turbine starter was calculated based on the dynamics of the rotor, start-up logic, and compressor map. In a recent research, the pressure ratio was assumed as a linear function of the rotor speed and the required starter...

the harmful effects of many chemical food preservatives are well established, so this has triggered interest in natural methods of preservation. monolaurin, a monoester of lauric acid, founds naturally in some foods and has various antiviral and antibacterial activities. evaluation of the effects of monolaurin separately and in combination with lactic acid bacteria (lab) starter culture on grow...

in order to investigate the effect of adding fennel powder (foeniculum vulgare) in starter diet on performance, immunity system and biometric parameters of holstein calves, 30 holstein calves (15 males and 15 females) with birth weight of 40±0.5 kg were used in a completely randomized design. experimental diets were: 1. starter without fennel powder (control), 2. starter containing 0.4% fennel ...

Enterococci are used as starter and probiotic cultures in foods, and they occur as natural food contaminants. The genus Enterococcus is of increased significance as a cause of nosocomial infections, and this trend is exacerbated by the development of antibiotic resistance. In this study, we investigated the incidence of known virulence determinants in starter, food, and medical strains of Enter...

The objective of this study was to determine the undegradable dietary protein requirements of veal calves. Two experiments were carried out with Holstein bull calves from 3-10 days of age until slaughter at 20 weeks of age. Both experiments were divided into starter and finishing periods. Calves were offered starter pellets on an ad lib. basis from seven days of age. Diets were formulated to be...

BACKGROUND Esophageal cancer is unusually frequent in Western Kenya, despite the low prevalence of classical risk factors such as heavy drinking and tobacco smoking. Among Kenyans consumption of fermented milk is an old tradition. Our hypothesis is that alcohol and acetaldehyde are produced during the fermentation process and that their carcinogenic potential contributes to the high incidence o...

Bacteriocin production in Lactobacillus plantarum NC8 is activated by coculture with specific bacteriocin production-inducing bacterial strains. The system is further regulated by a three-component regulatory system involving a specific autoinducer peptide (PLNC8IF). We have used L. plantarum NC8 as a starter culture in Spanish-style green olive fermentations and examined the influence of cocul...
