Microalgae in waste stabilization ponds (WSP) have been shown to accumulate polyphosphate. This luxury uptake of phosphorus is influenced by the wastewater phosphate concentration, light intensity and temperature, but the dynamics of how these factors affect luxury uptake with respect to time are not understood. With improved understanding of the dynamics of this mechanism and how it could be m...
The title compound, potassium yttrium polyphosphate, KY(PO(3))(4), was synthesized using the flux method. The atomic arrangement consists of an infinite long-chain polyphosphate organization. Chains, with a period of four PO(4) tetra-hedra, run along the a-axis direction. Two other polymorphs of this phosphate are known, in space groups P21/n and C2/c.
Arthrobacter sp. strain PAO19 is a polyphosphate-accumulating organism isolated from maize rhizosphere soil. Here we report its genome sequence, which may shed light on its role in phosphate removal from water bodies. To our knowledge, this is the first genome announcement of a polyphosphate-accumulating strain of the genus Arthrobacter.
Purified fractions of cytosol, vacuoles, nuclei, and mitochondria of Saccharomyces cerevisiae possessed inorganic polyphosphates with chain lengths characteristic of each individual compartment. The most part (80-90%) of the total polyphosphate level was found in the cytosol fractions. Inactivation of a PPX1 gene encoding ~40-kDa exopolyphosphatase substantially decreased exopolyphosphatase act...
1. Under conditions of the endogenous respiration the mode of action of ethambutol on mycobacteria was studied. Oxygen uptake, 32P-incorporation and changes in the phosphate-content were measured as parameters for the behaviour of the metabolism. 2. In order to localize the first step of inhibition the radioactive isotope was applicated in a fixed chronological order and a fractionation in acid...
Several cations inhibit anaerobic fermentation of glucose by intact yeast cells. Some ions (e.g. Hg(++)) penetrate into the cytoplasm and cause an irreversible inhibition of fermentation. Other ions (e.g. UO(2) (++), Ni(++), and Co(++)) are reversibly bound to a substance at the outside of the yeast cell identified as polyphosphate. Although the cations are bound to exactly the same extent, the...
The important human pathogens Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae accumulate phosphate in the form of polyphosphate (A. Noegel and E. C. Gotschlich, J. Exp. Med. 157:2049-2060, 1983), and the localization of more than half of this long-chain polymer on the exterior of the cells suggests a function as a protective, capsule-like coating. To enable further genetic investigation of the...
Bovine inositol polyphosphate 1-phosphatase, a monomeric protein with a molecular mass of 44,000 Da, hydrolyzes the 1-position phosphate from inositol 1,3,4-trisphosphate and inositol 1,4-bisphosphate. The low abundance of inositol polyphosphate 1-phosphatase in tissues has precluded structural studies requiring large quantities of enzyme. We used recombinant Baculovirus harboring the cDNA of b...
This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate as a dietary ascorbic acid source on blood parameters of Caspian brown trout (Salmo trutta caspius), including red blood cell (RBC) count, white blood cell (WBC) and WBC differential. A total number of 600 Caspian brown trout (9.6±0.6 g) fingerlings were randomly distributed in triplicates among five treatments each conta...
The metabolism of polyphosphate is important for the virulence of a wide range of pathogenic bacteria and the enzymes of polyphosphate metabolism have been proposed as an anti-bacterial target. In the intracellular pathogen Francisella tularensis, the product of the gene FTT1564 has been identified as a polyphosphate kinase from the polyphosphate kinase 2 (PPK2) family. The isogenic deletion mu...
