The goal of our current consortium project is to launch a new era--functional genomics of poultry--by providing genomic resources [expressed sequence tags (EST) and DNA microarrays] and by examining global gene expression in target tissues of chickens. DNA microarray analysis has been a fruitful strategy for the identification of functional genes in several model organisms (i.e., human, rodents...

The present study investigated whether the genetic growth characteristics (fast or slow growing, lean or fat) of a mother influences her ability to partition nutrients to developing offspring. A total of sixty-one pregnant mice of three selected lines were used: fast-growing, relatively fat (FF, n 19); fast-growing, relatively lean (FL, n 23); and normal growth, relatively lean (NL, n 19). On d...

We present a multimodal volume-based pre-operative surgical planning system developed around the KRDL Virtual Workbench, a mirror-based Virtual Reality system for precise work with 3D data. The planning system is being developed in collaboration with the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), and is undergoing clinical evaluation at SGH and Tan Tock Seng Hospital where 16 cases have been planned. We...

A number of Distributed Hash Table(DHT)based publish/subscribe(Pub/Sub) protocols have been proposed to address the issue of scalability in P2P networks. However, their routing state and control message overhead are enormous, the routing depth for notifications is unnecessarily long. We propose SGH, a large-scale partition-based overlay for P2P network, to provide the architecture of Pub/Sub ro...

In this article we introduce the notion of a generalized system of fundamental sequences and we define its associated slow-growing hierarchy. We claim that these concepts are genuinely related to the classification of the complexity—the derivation length— of rewrite systems for which termination is provable by a standard termination ordering. To substantiate this claim, we re-obtain multiple re...

A proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was identified with autoantibodies from a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus. Specific antibodies were purified by affinity chromatography in which Novikoff hepatoma nucleolar proteins were conjugated to Sepharose-4B. The purified anti-PCNA antibodies produced bright nucleolar fluorescence in tumor cells as shown by indirect immunofluorescence....

In Drosophila ananassae, artificial selection was carried out for fast and slow remating speed for 10 generations. Response to selection resulted in rapid divergence in remating time in each of two replicates of both fast and slow lines. There were significant differences in mean remating time in females among fast, slow, and control lines. Regression coefficients for both fast and slow lines a...

Neurofibroma is a tumor composed of a complex proliferation of neuromesenchymal tissue (Schwann cells, perineural cells, fibroblast, and mast cells). We report a 45-year-old female who had a slow growing, large, soft, pedunculated mass on her left lateral neck. A skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of neurofibroma.
