This communication describes a facile method for the synthesis of conical-shaped Au nanoparticles with a hollow cavity by combining interfacial reaction and ultrasonic cavitation. The Au nanocones showed an enhancement factor of 7.7 × 10(8) in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection.

A new species of small, ciliated protozoon, Microcetus lappus gen. nov., sp. nov., from the rumen of Norwegian Red cattle is described. M. lappus possesses a novel cytopharyngeal apparatus of two rod-shaped structures, one situated on the dorsal side of the buccal cavity and one on the ventral side, suggesting that it belongs to a previously undescribed taxon.

We study spectral and far-field characteristics of lasing emission from stadium-shaped semiconductor (InGaAsP) microlasers. We demonstrate that the correspondence between a lasing far-field emission pattern and the result of a ray simulation becomes better as the number of lasing modes increases. This phenomenon is reproduced in the wave calculation of the cavity modes.

Cage-shaped proteins with an affinity for carbonaceous materials were constructed and used to assemble a nanostructure in which single-walled carbon nanotubes are surrounded by cobalt oxide nanoparticles with nanometre gaps. By changing the size of proteins and materials incorporated inside the cavity, similar structures with distinctively different properties can be fabricated.

A bowl-shaped organic host was prepared by linking two anthracene-embedded bispyridine ligands with two methylene spacers. The water-soluble host has a hemispherical hydrophobic cavity (∼1 nm in diameter) with two cationic methylenebispyridinyl (Lewis acidic) moieties and shows the selective recognition and encapsulation of aromatic guest molecules containing carbonyl groups in water.
