Clinical investigations using the Treponema pallidum immune adherence (TPIA) test as reported by Nelson (1953) were performed only by Olansky et al in 1954. In this paper an improved method of the TPIA test is described. The test was simple to perform and was highly specific for antitreponemal antibody. Furthermore, as it was possible to use heated T. pallidum as antigen the antigen suspension ...
We describe the development of an epitope-blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the sensitive and rapid detection of antibodies to Ross River virus (RRV) in human sera and known vertebrate host species. This ELISA provides an alternative method for the serodiagnosis of RRV infections.
Germ tubes of Candida albicans and C. stellatoidea clump in normal serum but disperse in serum from animals infected with either species of Candida. A new procedure for the assessment of grades of germ tube dispersion activity of serum is presented; this procedure is to count the number of freely dispersed germ tubes in test serum into which a definite number of yeast-type C. albicans has been ...
BACKGROUND Clinical diagnosis and follow up of cystic echinococcosis (CE) are based on imaging complemented by serology. Several immunodiagnostic tests are commercially available, but the development of new tools is still needed to overcome the lack of standardization of the target antigen, generally consisting of a crude extract of Echinococcus granulosus hydatid cyst fluid. In a previous work...
Agreements in qualitative and quantitative test results between the recently marketed NCS rapid plasma reagin card test (NCS Diagnostics Corp.) and the Macro-Vue rapid plasma reagin 18-mm circle card test (Hynson, Westcott and Dunning) were 99.2 and 99.1%, respectively, indicating the NCS RPR card test to be an acceptable alternative procedure for the serodiagnosis of syphilis.
Sera submitted to the Texas Department of Health for the serodiagnosis of Rickettsia typhi were tested by the microimmunofluorescent antibody technique and a new latex agglutination procedure. Results indicated that the latex agglutination test was sensitive and specific and would serve well as a first-line screening test for murine typhus.
Aims-To determine whether enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) results for Borrelia burgdorferi require confirmation by immunoblotting and how immunoblotting may best be used in the diagnosis of Lyme disease.Methods-Over one year, all referrals for Lyme disease to a district general hospital with a large tick population in its catchment area were tested by ELISA. Positive, low positive and...
Human cases of gastric anisakiasis caused by the zoonotic parasite Anisakis pegreffii are increasing in Italy. The disease is caused by ingestion of larval nematodes in lightly cooked or raw seafood. Because symptoms are vague and serodiagnosis is difficult, the disease is often misdiagnosed and cases are understimated.
The micro-ELISA described in this report is simple and can give objective results for the serodiagnosis of human cysticercosis. The visual assessment of results was satisfactory. The ELISA results showed a remarkably good correlation with IHA. It gave good reproudcibility. Cross-reactions were eliminated by using whole worm antigen instead of the cysticercus.
A polysaccharide microarray platform was prepared by immobilizing Burkholderia pseudomallei and Burkholderia mallei polysaccharides. This polysaccharide array was tested with success for detecting B. pseudomallei and B. mallei serum (human and animal) antibodies. The advantages of this microarray technology over the current serodiagnosis of the above bacterial infections were discussed.
