Researchers in the social sciences currently employ a variety of mathematical/ computational models for studying complex systems. Despite the diversity of these models, the majority can be grouped into one of three types: agent (rule-based) modeling, dynamical (equation-based) modeling and statistical (aggregate-based) modeling. The purpose of the current paper is to offer a fourth type: case-b...

The direct CH4 conversion (DMC) to methanol is a challenging topic. In this study, the Ru/SZ (sulfated zirconia) single-atom catalysts (SACs) were synthesized and utilized DMC under mild conditions (70 °C). yield over SACs (18.32 µmol, TOF ≥ 80 h–1) significantly exceeded sum of yields SZ (0.67 µmol) Ru/ZrO2 (0.29 µmol), indicating that new active center was formed on SACs. Combined with result...

The number of South American camelids (SACs) in England and Wales is increasing and with this comes a risk of new and emerging infections. Although classified as livestock, these animals are also treated as pets and may be in regular contact with humans. This paper reviews zoonotic diseases that have been identified in SACs in England and Wales, and which pose a potential risk to human health. ...

Autosomal recessive spastic ataxia of Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS [MIM 270550]) is an early-onset neurodegenerative disorder caused by mutations in the SACS gene. Over 170 SACS mutations have been reported worldwide and are thought to cause loss of function of sacsin, a poorly characterized and massive 520 kDa protein. To establish an animal model and to examine the pathophysiological basis of ...

This article exemplifies the application of a pattern-based method, called SaCS (Safe Control Systems), on a case taken from the nuclear domain. The method is supported by a pattern language and provides guidance on the development of design concepts for safety critical systems. The SaCS language offers six different kinds of basic patterns as well as operators for composition.

A new species was synthesized artificially by chromosome doubling in a hybrid. The ensuing polyploid type exhibits an apomictic nature and maintains its morphological characteristics in the progeny. It showed a frequency of multiembryonic sacs of 29% in the ovules examined, whereas sacs were absent in the diploid type.
