The aim of this paper is to devise a new reliable dynamic route guidance approach by integrating the A* algorithm, the concept of reliability and an existing route guidance method into a single package. A new purpose-developed software tool, the Imperial College Navigation Software (ICNavS), is presented, so as to implement and demonstrate the new approach on a real road network, using simulate...

How do birds orient over familiar terrain? In the best studied avian species, the homing pigeon (Columba livia), two apparently independent primary mechanisms are currently debated: either memorized visual landmarks provide homeward guidance directly, or birds rely on a compass to home from familiar locations. Using miniature Global Positioning System tracking technology and clock-shift procedu...

Nowadays, self-adaptive multi-agent systems are applied in a variety of areas, including transportation, telecommunications, etc. The main challenge in route guidance system is to direct vehicles to their destination in a dynamic traffic situation, with the aim of reducing the traveling time and to ensure and efficient use of available road networks capacity. In this paper we propose a self-ada...

In this paper we study the problem of the assignment of road paths to vehicles. Due to the assumption that a low percentage of vehicles follow the routes proposed by route guidance systems (RGS) and the increase of the use of the same, the conventional RGSs might shortly result obsolete. Assuming a complete road network information at the disposal of RGSs, their proposed paths are related with ...

The emergence of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) has considerably changed the field of transportation modeling during the past ten years. By Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) we refer to transportation systems which apply emerging information technologies to alleviate congestion problems (see, for example, Transportation Research Board 1999). They combine advanced surveillance s...

We have developed AR-Navi, an in-vehicle navigation system that captures real-time video via an in-vehicle camera and overlays guidance on a video display. In this study, we conducted a driving experiment to evaluate the location-adjustment-method of AR-Navi. We also discuss the registration accuracy of the route guidance that AR-Navi gives at intersections.

In many public transport oriented cities in the world, especially Asian cities, the public transport system has been developed extensively, to the extent that it has become increasingly difficult to navigate. Although inter-modal transfers are common and often necessary, a complete set of the routes across transport modes is generally not presented in a form that is accessible to travelers, as ...

This paper describes a cooperative decentralized architecture for reactive real-time route guidance. The architecture is cooperative in the sense that it allows adjacent local controllers to exchange information regarding the traffic conditions in their territories. A set of local decision rules and associated heuristic functions to support the cooperative architecture are specified. A protocol...

In this study, a traffic management measure is presented by combining the route guidance of Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) and the continuous network design (CNDP) to alleviate increasing traffic congestion. The route guidance recommends the travelers to choose the shortest path based on marginal travel cost and user constraints. The problem is formulated into a bi-level programmin...
