The infection status of harbor seals Phoca vitulina in central California, USA, was evaluated through broad surveillance for pathogens in stranded and wild-caught animals from 2001 to 2008, with most samples collected in 2007 and 2008. Stranded animals from Mendocino County to San Luis Obispo County were sampled at a rehabilitation facility: The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC, n = 175); wild-caught...

The importance of turquoise color in ancient ideologies encouraged craftsmen to build objects in that color. Turquoise stones have been admired by Persians and Egyptians since antiquity, bearing a symbolic meaning due to their color. Examination of a number of ancient Egyptian turquoise faience works reveals a remarkable similarity between their methods of production with those of the Persian K...

Deep-sea pressure vessels are specialized designed for automatic deployment from underwater to the surface. These find extensive applications in life-saving and transportation. Their interiors furnished with a pair of sealing rings, one which is lip-shaped, other convex shape, ensure dependable seal. With increasing water depth, rings experience augmented pressure, resulting gradual pressing in...

Southern elephant seals, Mirounga leonina, undertake large-scale oceanic movements to access favourable foraging areas. Successful foraging areas of elephant seals from the Kerguelen Islands are investigated here in relation to oceanographic parameters. Movements and diving activity of the seals as well as oceanographic data were collected through a new generation of satellite relayed devices m...

We define and studyco-Noetherian dimension of rings for which the injective envelopeof simple modules have finite Krull-dimension. This  is a Moritainvariant dimension that measures how far the ring is from beingco-Noetherian. The co-Noetherian dimension of certain rings, including commutative rings, are determined. It is shown that the class ${mathcal W}_n$ of rings with co-Noetherian dimension...

In 2003, Bechmann-Pasquinucci introduced the concept of quantum seals, a quantum analogue to wax seals used to close letters and envelopes. Since then, some improvements on the method have been found. We first review the current quantum sealing techniques, then introduce and discuss potential applications of quantum message sealing, and conclude with some discussion of the limitations of quantu...

Campylobacter and Salmonella spp. prevalence and antimicrobial drug sensitivity were determined in northern elephant seals that had not entered the water and seals that were stranded on the California coast. Stranded seals had a higher prevalence of pathogenic bacteria, possibly from terrestrial sources, which were more likely to be resistant.

The biliary trematode Pseudamphistomum truncatum parasitizes a wide range of fish-eating mammals, including humans. Here we report the emergence of this parasite in grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) in the Baltic Sea. One hundred eighty-three of 1 554 grey seals (11.9%) examined from 2002-2013 had detectable hepatobiliary trematode infection. Parasite identification was confirmed as P. truncatum ...

The behavior of Hawaiian monk seals at French Frigate Shoals was studied in order to obtain information on their adaptation to a tropical climate. The seals were unable to remain on the dry beach platform during the day except during very high winds, extensive cloud cover, or rain. The seals characteristically moved down to wet sand on the beach slope during the day and returned to the beach pl...
