We address soliton reflection/transmission at interface between a uniform medium and an optical lattice with focusing Kerr nonlinearity. We reveal that such interfaces afford rich new opportunities for controlling the reflection and transmission coefficients and the nonlinear Snell law, the key control parameters being the spatial frequency and depth of refractive index modulation in the lattice.

Frequency-dependent reflection coefficients of P waves at the inner core boundary (ICB) are estimated from the spectral ratios of PKiKP and PcP waves observed by the high-sensitivity seismograph network (Hi-net) in Japan. The corresponding PKiKP reflection locations at the ICB are distributed beneath the western Pacific. At frequencies where noise levels are sufficiently low, spectra of reflect...

Step additions of small hydrophilic solutes to the perfusate of isolated dog lungs produce weight changes (Vargas-Johnson). The product: (observed reflection coefficient) times (observed filtration coefficient) for the lung endothelial barrier is obtained from the initial weight slope per unit osmolality change. The observed filtration coefficient determined from the sustained constant weight s...

The Staverman reflection coefficient, sigma for several permeant molecules was determined in human red cell suspensions with a Durrum stopped-flow spectrophotometer. This procedure was first used with dog, cat, and beef red cells and with human red cells. The stopped-flow technique used was similar to the rapid-flow method used by those who originally reported sigma measurements in human red ce...

Ž . A method to determine ground-penetrating radar GPR velocities, which utilize Brewster angles, is presented. The method determines the relative dielectric constant ratio at interface boundaries where the radar wave is traveling from a low-velocity to a high-velocity medium. Using Brewster angle analysis is currently the only means to determine the velocity of the medium below the deepest det...

Volume changes due to osmotic flow in the distal portion of proximal tubules of Necturi were measured by the split oil drop technique. In agreement with previous findings no volume flow was induced by NaCl concentrations close to 60 mM. The tubule wall was found to be permeable to plasma electrolytes, which have an apparent reflection coefficient of 0.69. The mean apparent hydraulic conductivit...

Active boundary surfaces intended to control reverberation or other characteristics of enclosed sound fields have often been investigated using plane wave tubes. This paper presents an analysis of actively terminated semi-infinite and finite-length plane wave tubes to provide needed clarification of the effects of these surfaces. By considering relationships between complex pressure-amplitude r...

A simple and intuitive geometical method to analyze Fresnel formulas is presented. It applies to transparent media and is valid for perpendicular and parallel polarizations. The approach gives a graphical characterization particularly simple of the critical and Brewster angles. It also provides an interpretation of the relation between the reflection coefficients for both basic polarizations as...

Isolated perfused rabbit hearts have been used to determine the reflection coefficients, sigma, of the heart capillaries to certain lipoid-insoluble substances. This was done by initially perfusing the heart with a Ringer solution containing no test molecule and then suddenly switching to a solution which differed from the original only by containing a small amount of test substance. This produ...

The reflection and transmission of thermoelastic plane waves at an imperfect boundary of two dissimilar fibre-reinforced transversely isotropic thermoelastic solid half-spaces under hydrostatic initial stress has been investigated. The appropriate boundary conditions are applied at the interface to obtain the reflection and transmission coefficients of various reflected and transmitted waves wi...
