The fact that the quantum relative entropy is non-increasing with respect to quantum physical evolutions lies at the core of many optimality theorems in quantum information theory and has applications in other areas of physics. In this work, we establish improvements of this entropy inequality in the form of physically meaningful remainder terms. One of the main results can be summarized inform...

The concept of entropy is fundamental for many branches of physics and other sciences dealing with systems which reveal a certain degree of complexity and disorder. As stressed in the monograph 1, ‘‘entropy is not a single concept but rather a family of notions". In relation to quantum theory, the mainstream of development is formed by four main overlapping lines. They can be referred to as the...

We introduce a composition of quantum states of a bipartite system which is based on the reshuffling of density matrices. This non-Abelian product is associative and stems from the composition of quantum maps acting on a simple quantum system. It induces a semi-group in the subset of states with maximally mixed partial traces. Subadditivity of the von Neumann entropy with respect to this produc...

The development of quantum information theory motivated the extension to the quantum realm of notions from algorithmic complexity theory. Because of the structure of quantum mechanics, several inequivalent generalizations are possible. The same phenomenon characterizes the extension of the dynamical entropy of Kolmogorov and Sinai. In the following, we shall examine the relations between the qu...

Relative entropy is a measure of distinguishability for quantum states, and it plays a central role in quantum information theory. The family of Renyi entropies generalizes to Renyi relative entropies that include, as special cases, most entropy measures used in quantum information theory. We construct a Euclidean path-integral approach to Renyi relative entropies in conformal field theory, the...

We prove the long-standing conjecture stating that Gaussian thermal input states minimize the output von Neumann entropy of one-mode phase-covariant quantum Gaussian channels among all the input states with a given entropy. Phase-covariant quantum Gaussian channels model the attenuation and the noise that affect any electromagnetic signal in the quantum regime. Our result is crucial to prove th...

In classical information theory, entropy rate and algorithmic complexity per symbol are related by a theorem of Brudno. In this paper, we prove a quantum version of this theorem, connecting the von Neumann entropy rate and two notions of quantum Kolmogorov complexity, both based on the shortest qubit descriptions of qubit strings that, run by a universal quantum Turing machine, reproduce them a...

We propose dual thermodynamics corresponding to black hole mechanics with the identifications E → A/4, S → M , and T ′ → T−1 in Planck units. Here A, M and T are the horizon area, mass and Hawking temperature of a black hole and E, S and T ′ are the energy, entropy and temperature of a corresponding dual quantum system. We show that, for a Schwarzschild black hole, the dual variables formally s...

We formulate and prove a quantum Shannon-McMillan theorem. The theorem demonstrates the significance of the von Neumann entropy for translation invariant ergodic quantum spin systems on Z-lattices: the entropy gives the logarithm of the essential number of eigenvectors of the system on large boxes. The one-dimensional case covers quantum information sources and is basic for coding theorems.
